The Columbian Wins Gold in National Competition

Columbia High School's student newspaper, The Columbian, received a Gold Medalist Ranking from the Columbia University Scholastic Press Association.

Editions of the 2009-2010 publication were entered into the annual competition and critiqued in four categories. The newspaper received top All-Columbian Honors in "Coverage" and "Graphic Presentation" and high honors in "Writing and Editing" and "Business Operations."  One judge commented, "The paper is exciting to look at, every single issue." Another stated, "The staff builds momentum and excitement over the year. The results are full of life, verve and impact."

Ms. Cindy Malhotra, graphic arts teacher and Ms. Jan McGrane, journalism teacher, are advisors to The Columbian. The 09-10 editors, (pictured with the newspaper's staff and advisors) were CHS graduates Co-Editors-in-Chief Emma Gilheany and Olivia Karten; Co-Design Editors Hillary Hersh and Jenna Mercadante; Photo Editor Soleil Garnaeu; and Art Editor Alexander Winkler.

I would have expected nothing less from my niece, Olivia Karten and her peers. Congratulations to all on this lofty accomplishment!
