Democratic Incumbents Retain Seats in 27th District

Codey re-elected for Senate; Jasey, McKeon hold Assembly seats

Updated Nov. 9 at 12:30 a.m.

After being redistricted from a Democratic Essex-County stronghold, to a district split between Essex and Republican-dominated Morris Counties — the Democratic incumbents retained their seats to control the 27th Legislative District.

With 100 percent of the Morris County votes tallied and 99 percent of Essex County's votes reported, former Gov. Richard Codey, and his runningmates Assemblyman John McKeon and Assemblywoman Mila Jasey, had retained their seats.

Codey (D), formerly of West Orange, now of Roseland, beat out Tea Party candidate William Eames of Whippany, preliminary results show. Eames conceded the race at 10:15 p.m.

McKeon (D), former Mayor of West Orange and Assemblywoman Mila Jasey of South Orange also won handily defeating Republican challengers Lee Holtzman, a lawyer from Livingston, and Nicole Hagner, mayor of Chatham Township.

"They thought they were going to bury us in this Republican district, I guess not," McKeon said to a roomful of supporters and officials at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in West Orange. "This is always not about the individuals ... what it's about is about all of us and what we share and it's our principals."

"Over the next two years, we're going to work really hard so that these numbers are doubled," said Jasey.

The win comes after a redistricting plan approved earlier this year moved the legislative borders of District 27 beyond Essex County to include six communities from Republican-dominated Morris County.

The redrawn district map added the Morris County communities of Chatham, East Hanover, Florham Park, Hanover, Harding and Madison in the same voting group as the Essex County communities of Caldwell, Essex Fells, Livingston, Maplewood, Millburn, Roseland, South Orange and West Orange.

The Essex County communities of Fairfield, Newark, North Caldwell, Orange and West Caldwell were removed from the district.

Though the well-known incumbents were forced to campaign outside the democratic stronghold of Essex County, they prevailed. Codey was endorsed by a fleet of GOP leaders in September, including the sitting mayors of Florham Park and Hanover.

Codey thanked Hanover Mayor Joseph Pannullo and other Republicans for their endorsement and said he would continue to be an "independent voice" for the people he represents. "No one will tell any of us how to vote, ever."

Codey a former governor, is the longest-serving current member of the legislature. He has served in the state Senate since 1982, and was Senate President from 2004 to 2009.

McKeon, former mayor of West Orange, was elected to the Assembly in 2001.

Jasey was first elected in 2007 after serving three terms on the South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education.

Wait until the people of Chatham, East Hanover, Florham Park, Hanover, Harding and Madison are pinched by Codey, Jasey and McKeon by their Tax and Spoend policies and high propperty taxes. Then they will be changing their tune on voting for these three failures.

I am certain that "your" contribution as the voice of the people on oh so many blogs and news feeds will go down as being truly momentous in the House of Winners.

Can all politicians now go out and clean up all election lawn posters on highway exits and elsewhere? Its now considered litter and an eyesore.

To Those Essex County residents who voted for change. I thank you. To those residents who did not vote, shame on you. For those who voted for the same old same old Democratics who have put us into $1.5 BILLION of County bond debt, what will happen when that debt comes due and interest rates rise? Higher property taxes will be the result. As I told everyone on my website, Christie's 2% property tax cap excludes bond debt, pensions and benefits. Essex County residents are paying more than $198 million for the bond debt service, it will not decrease. I hope you are happy with your decision and your vote, as this debt will negatively taffect the future of your children if they stay in this County. I gave you every County expense that I have uncovered through four years of OPRA requests and yet it did not matter. I really do not understand why only 15% of registered voters cast a ballot and why those who did, voted for those who are finanicially burying us.

You had my vote Marilyn. I voted for none of the incumbants in the District 34 and District 5 elections! The people who elected these same bozos apparently must love getting rimmed up the behind thorough high taxes to support an almost Bankrupt N.J.

Marilyn, keep giving them hell on your web site. You might want to check out some of my suggestions too. I think that you'll also find that greed is nonpartisan, no party has a monopoly on it, unfortunately.

Marty: Thank you for that. It is very disheartening to do all the work, and just ask people to read and learn. If you would like all of my files, you are welcome to them.
I had a petition to send in under N.J.S.A. 40A:5-22, read it, it is very interesting.
But at this juncture, I don't feel like spending $200 to file the petition and have the courts rule against us as they too are on the most part, part of the system that does not work. But I do have violations of our money being spent illegally.

To Justin: Thank you. I really don't get the sentiment of the voters. I am listening to WNYC Public Radio and the topic to day is to new parents and how being a parent has affected their voting. Most from NJ have said they are less liberal now, worry about the environment and college costs. I am for the environment and am a fiscal conservative yet they continue to vote for the Democrats who spend spend spend and build build build so what am I missing? Joe D has retired from the job he is doing and collecting a salary and a pension from a previous County job yet these people who are so worried about sending their children to college voted for all his Freeholder friends, some of whom have two jobs and most of who have families with County jobs. Should I continue the fight, continue with uncovering things through OPRA and run again in three or four years or are we just doomed for bankruptcy which is where I believe we are going on all levels. We can't continue to spend and build restaurants and lose money without it eventually falling out from under us.

Thoughts please thanks M.English

The "bury" thing by Asm. McKeon was a joke about Gov. Cody's having grown up in and working for a funeral home. I'm sure of this. I was in the room. It got a laugh.
