Newly minted Maplewood Township Committee member India Larrier will be at Words Bookstore to cheer on her mom, Rebecca Hayes, as Hayes read from her book Private Cathay's Secret at 2 p.m. on Feb. 12.

Hayes' book was published last year, but it was a timely choice for this year's African American History program at Words in celebration of Black History Month.

Private Cathay’s Secret depicts the determination and perseverance of a young slave girl, Cathay Williams, as her life is altered forever by involvement in the American Civil War. Larrier says that the book appeals to both teens and adults — especially teachers.

Also on hand will be Larrier's father who is an official Buffalo Soldier re-enactor.  He will be dressed in a full Buffalo Soldier uniform.
