A Touch of Jazz Legend in Maplewood

The Nat Adderley Jr. Trio has two Friday night concerts upcoming in Maplewood.

We're a little spoiled here in Maplewood, not always grasping what treasures have fallen in our laps.

One such treasure is the Nat Adderley, Jr Trio, often found groovin' at Cent'Anni Restaurant on Highland Place in the Village. Adderley and drummer Greg Bufford and bassist Gregory Jones were recently captured in these photographs by Joel Stern. They will be playing a series of three gigs at Cent'Anni on Fridays, April 30 and May 7.

Nat Adderley Jr. is best known for his work with Luther Vandross. Adderley, who hails from a family of notable jazz musicians, wrote (and arranged) Vandross's first top 20 pop hits. Nat also arranged many of Luther's most popular records, including "Superstar," "Here and Now," "If Only for One Night," "Creepin," "If This World Were Mine," and "So Amazing."

But at Cent'Anni, Adderley and his trio mostly leave the R&B behind and stick to jazz standards and covers of works by the likes of Herbie Hancock and Chick Correa.
