Adult School Registration Underway

South Orange-Maplewood Adult School Classes are Filling Quickly

School's back in session, and not just for kids.  With registration underway, South Orange-Maplewood Adult School classes are filling quickly for the fall semester. More than 150 choices in the course catalogue means that locals can study computers, languages and cooking.  The selections also offer an opportunity to discuss film, to learn about German Romantic Poetry or to go dancing with your significant other.

A number of classes in the Active Mind, Computers and Technology, and Languages sections offer an early bird discount for those who register by Sept. 18, which is quickly approaching.

As always, the offerings are varied, and include the popular “College for a Day,” when locals can study Geology, German Romantic Poetry, Sociology/Anthropology, and Greek Comedy, all on Saturday, November 21.  The twentieth annual Repath Lecture, on Wednesday, Nov. 18, will feature esteemed educator Everett Kline on what we should expect from our schools.

Classes also include those that appeal to particular ages and stages. New for seniors is instruction in social networking via the Internet, while a course for the younger set is called “Teen Fashionistas.”

"We're very excited about the Filmmaker's Symposium with Chuck Rose," said the Adult School's Marilyn Lehren. "Chuck Rose presents private screenings of films with a discussion and Q&A with the director or one of the actors following the screening.”

The Adult School once again will be hosting top lecturers, including local resident and CHS parent David Brancaccio, host and senior editor of PBS' NOW, an award-winning
newsmagazine.

“We're a community school for all ages,” says Lehren. Besides senior and teen classes, the Adult School offers “parent/child classes in a variety of subjects, including vegetarian cooking and science—where kids and their adult will dissect a cow's eye.”

She further notes that, “Our fitness classes are fun and varied: Zumba, spinning, belly dancing, karate aerobics. Dance classes are a fun night out for couples and singles—I like to think of the dance classes as ‘Date Night at the Adult School.'"

The Web site, www.somadultschool.org, offers more information and details of Early Bird registration.

And potential students can mark their calendars now for September 16, Night Out at the Adult School, 7:30 p.m. at Columbia High School's Black Box Theatre. The evening will include a short story performance by actor Emily Zacharias, an art exhibit, and refreshments.
