From concerts to murder mysteries, fun events abound locally this weekend. Make apple pies at the South Mountain YMCA, play games at the Maplewood Library, raise money for Hurricane Irene relief with a concert in Millburn, or win baskets at the Our Lady of Sorrows Tricky Tray in South Orange. US Army Field Band Free Concert
Hearing the US Army Field Band is exciting at any time. To hear them perform on Veterans’ Day makes for a very memorable event. South Orange Middle School will host this inspiring concert, which is open to the community. For a perfect autumn family activity, consider attending the South Mountain Y’s pie making night. Bring your apple peeler and pie plate, if you have them, and come prepared to make pie! Hurricane Aid - a Benefit Concert
While the recent snowstorm may have distracted us recently, many Millburn residents are still suffering from the effects of Hurricane Irene. This benefit concert will donate proceeds to the Wyoming Club and Down the Block, organizations that will in turn donate to township residents who suffered damage from the storm. Featured performers include Millburn resident and harpist Odarka Stockert with her duet Slight Imperfection, Millburn resident Brian Halpin and his jazz group the Heptoctratics, Millburn resident Deena Shoshkes with a combination of her groups the Cucumbers (with her husband Jon Fried) and The Laughing Boys, and event organizer Alex Silberman and his band. $20; Friday at 7:30 p.m.; Millburn
Spend an adults-only evening with the chance to win fabulous prizes at the Our Lady of Sorrows School’s 11th Annual Tricky Tray. The ticket price includes 1 sheet of tickets for the center table. Sometimes playing a game together makes for a perfect afternoon. The Maplewood Memorial Library will host an afternoon of games for all ages, including Board games, Twister, card games, jigsaw puzzles and Play Dance Party 2ance Party 2 on the Wii, and Play Pac-Man on Playstation 2. Brotherhood Concerts Presents the Richie Furay Band
Richie Furay, a 1997 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, was a founding member of Buffalo Springfield, one of the most influential bands in rock history. Furay will perform a concert at Temple B'nai Jeshurun to benefit the TBJ Brotherhood who will use the funds to aid and foster the work of local charitable organizations and non-profit groups.
