Arriba! It’s Cinco de Mayo About Town, Bay-bee!

An authentic Mexican restaurant in Maplewood opens for business. Timely, no?!

In a celebratory Cinco de Mayo mood and buoyed by the gourmet guacamole (outrageously good, btw) offered up when I stopped into for my coffee fix, I meandered about the corner to Highland to see if there was word of an opening date for Cactus Charly. SORPRESA: It opened yesterday!

I popped in to get the scoop from the son of one of the owners, Genaro. “We’re going to have some mariachis in later to celebrate,” he said. I also got the insider info on exactly what’s gonna set this menu apart from the mostly Tex-Mex competition in the area from one of the lovely cooks, Sandra:

“Fresh, fresh, fresh - we use only the freshest ingredients in everything,” she said, adding that they don’t douse everything in queso like other places. “I just use the right touch of cheese for flavor.” (She also mentioned fajitas as one of their specialties.)

That is sure to be music to the ears of any true Mexican food lover (including mi esposo). The prices are also sure to be a welcome sight to Maplewoodians – not an item on the lunch menu is over $7. Es muy bueno, no?

Happy May 5th, y’all!
