Smoke Causes Commotion in Village

Fire trucks converge on Baker Street, Maplewood Avenue intersection

The details are still sketchy, but fire trucks responded to what apparently was a report of smoke from an electrical problem in Maplewood Village Friday night.

The problem was in the Wachovia bank building at the corner of Baker Street and Maplewood Avenue.

According to Maplewood fire communications, a ladder unit from Irvington was on the scene, and the South Orange Rescue Squad also was called in although the squad's chief, Don Boyle, told Patch they only stood by because no medical care was needed.

The S.O. squad posted two photos of the scene on Twitpic, here and here.

What's unclear is whether a fire broke out, or the extent of any damages. We'll have more details as they become available.
