Cougar Girls Track Wins Another County Title

Columbia girls indoor track captures title; boys take fifth.

 

The Columbia girls indoor track team just continues to prove that they're in a league by themselves when it comes to Essex County championships. On Sunday at Seton Hall University, the Columbia girls captured yet another county title, beating out second place Mt. St. Dominic 133.5 - 44.

The girls were led by multiple gold medal performances from Kayann Richards and Brittney Jackson. Richards took first place in 200 meter dash (26.11), the 400 (59.23) and the 55-meter hurdles (8.5). Jackson won the high jump (5' 4.5"), the 800 (2:19.11) and the 1,600 (5:31.94).

Other winners for the Columbia girls included Jasmine Carter in the 55-meter dash edging Dominique Booker, Adebunmi Gbadebo in the 3,200, winning by nearly 11 seconds, and the 4x400 with TyVonna Johnson, Ashley Phillips, Ayaana Smith and Brittany Padmore.

In fact, of the 10 events Columbia won nine, with the shot put being the only event they did not score in. Other scorers for the Cougars included Amber Ballew in the 55 with a fifth place finish and Kelsey Jackson in the 200 with a third place. Richards was also fifth in the high jump, Carter was fourth in the 200 and Jade Johnson was fifth in the 800.

On the boys' side, D.J. Roberts powered the Cougars to a fifth place overall finish, with 34 points. Irvington was the overall winner with 66.

Roberts won the 400 meter dash (50.42) and was the anchor of the winning 4x400 team of Junior Derius, Norman Ifill and Devon Lee, and Roberts also took third place in the 200. Brian Basili was the only other scorer for the Cougar boys with a fifth place spot in the 1,600.
