The owners of Crane's Delicatessen & Cheese Shoppe — a Maplewood institution for the past seven years — announced today that they would be closing up shop as of Feb. 25. The store was scheduled to close almost a year ago, but remained open after a new lease was negotiated with the landlord.

This time, no such salvation seems to be pending. Steve and Janet Crane sent a farewell message this evening:

Dear Crane's Patrons,

It is with deep regret that on Saturday, February 25, at 5PM - Crane's will be closing its doors. It has been our pleasure to serve you over the past 7 years, but unfortunately the decrease in our volume of business, due to the economic downturn and rising costs has made it difficult for us  to sustain our business model. We appreciate everyone who has supported us throughout the years. (Our future is unknown and look forward to future endeavors.) The news comes on the heels of the announcement this morning that Kocafe, on Springfield Avenue, would close after less than a year in business.
