Did You Know? The District Has a Preschool Program

Registration has opened for the 2011-2012 school year.

The school district of South Orange/Maplewood will offer two sessions of preschool classes (ELLI) beginning in September 2011. These classes will only be available for students who are or will turn 4 years old by October 1, 2011.

ELLI — or "Early Launch to Literacy Initiative" — is the title the states gives to programs receiving some financial support for these programs. The monies that the district receives from Trenton are minimal, but the district nonetheless follows all state guidelines.

According to Renee Joyce, School Social Worker with the Marshall/Jefferson Child Study Team, the preschool population will be equally proportioned, on a first come, first serve basis to include:

  • Preschool disabled four-year olds,
  • Tuition paying students ($3,700 annual tuition for two hour/ day session),
  • Economically disadvantaged four year olds (free and reduced lunch eligible).

Each class will have a team of one highly qualified preschool teacher, and one or two aides with a maximum of 18 students.  There will be a morning session (8:05 -10:20 a.m.) and an afternoon session (12:20 – 2:35 p.m.).

The calendar for the ELLI preschool program will run concurrently with the rest of the school district. The classes (2 sessions) will be held at Jefferson Elementary School, and will further enhance the existing preschool programs in the building.

If you think you would like to have your four-year old child enrolled in this program contact the district for a registration packet and return it to the South Orange/ Maplewood School District Registration Office located at 525 Academy Street.

If you have questions, please contact Renee Joyce at 973-378-7698  Ext. 6116 or email her at rjoyce@somsd.k12.nj.us.
