EIES of New Jersey to Hold October Gala

Tony-award winner Judy Kaye and pianist Phillip Della Penna will perform.

Tony-award winning actress Judy Kaye and pianist Phillip Della Penna will provide the entertainment at the 35th annual EIES of New Jersey gala on Oct. 20. This year’s honorees include the Maplewood Lions Club and former New Jersey Health Commissioner Dr. Fred Jacobs.

Kaye won the 1988 Tony for Best Featured Actress for her performance as Carlotta in "Phantom of the Opera," and was also nominated in 2002 for her role in "Mamma Mia."

Della Penna played for years at Windows on the World and the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. He has orchestrated and played with performers like the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Sammy Kaye Orchestra and Vaughn Monroe Orchestra. He was music director for Marlene Dietrich, Jimmy Durante, Judy Garland, Lesley Gore and Dorothy Lamour.

The gala will be held at the Crystal Plaza in Livingston. Cocktails begin at 6 p.m. For ticket information, call 973-762-0552. EIES of New Jersey is the oldest radio reading service in the state and one of more than 100 such services nationwide broadcasting printed publications to blind, visually impired and physically disabled listeners. Almost 200 volunteers read from newspapers, books and magazines over a subcarrier frequency of WSOU at Seton Hall University, and the EIES signal is also broadcast online.
