Elections 2011: India Larrier, Democratic Candidate for Maplewood Township Committee

The candidate presents her qualifications and platform.

Patch has asked all political candidates running for public office in the general election on November 8, 2011, to supply statements of up to 500 words giving their qualifications and platform.

A Community is only as strong as its residents are willing to get involved. I have made this comment many times, and I have been involved since 1998. I served on the board of the Community Coalition on Race. I have volunteered for the Maplewood First Aid Squad since 2005. My husband, John, and I helped establish the Midland Park Neighborhood Association. Running for public office was not always my aspiration, but serving Maplewood and helping to meet its challenges are my goals.

If elected to the Township Committee, I plan to join the effort to increase shared services initiatives.  With the Municipal Court, animal control and vehicle maintenance initiatives, Maplewood has made great strides in this area.  I hope to investigate the sharing of library offerings, as well as fire and health department services.  Continuing this endeavor will brings cost savings, service enhancements and more efficiency to residents.

Overall, Maplewood’s crime statistics have improved, thanks in part to the efforts of the Maplewood Police Department. However, we must keep on the alert within our neighborhoods to ensure continued success. One resource we have is the unity that is fostered in neighborhood associations. At one time, there were over 30 such associations.

I intend to prioritize building neighborhood organizations as the front line in keeping our children, homes and neighborhoods safe. Residents need to collaborate with law enforcement and Township officials to implement programs such as block watches that will deter criminal activity. Innovative youth programs keep our kids engaged in positive activities so they will not succumb to the draw of nuisance crime.

Maplewood has three business districts that should be nurtured so they will remain strong. The viability of Maplewood Village, Springfield Avenue and Irvington Avenue are critical to Maplewood’s future.  Enticing more businesses, such as the new Walgreens, will not only further aid these areas’ ability to increase consumer traffic, but will also help increase our tax revenue. Careful and discerning development of the soon to be vacated Post office site is crucial to this effort.

Sixteen years ago, John and I decided that Maplewood Township would be a good place to raise our family. We have not been disappointed. I ask you to vote for Vic DeLuca and me so we can work together to ensure that our community remains the strong and vibrant place we have come to love. Thank you.
