First Aid Squad Becomes Cooling Center in Blackout
Residents who lost power last night availed themselves of some cool temps, refreshments and comfy cots.
This dispatch came in this morning from Bruce Mandel of the Maplewood First Aid Squad:
The Maplewood First Aid Squad was utilized as a cooling center last night. Beginning just after the blackouts, Maplewood Police Department began referring citizens to the Boyden Avenue location. Additional First Aid Squad volunteers came in to help out the very hot residents who came to our door. Army cots and futons were set up in our training room (see attached photos). Squad members made trips to their homes to bring additional pillows for our guests. Approximately a dozen people spent the night with ages ranging from eight years old to over 90 years old. The squad purchased water, food and snacks to make everyone's stay just a bit more comfortable. Some of the squad members slept on sleeping bags on the floor, giving up the comfort of their beds to the strangers that came knocking.
