Man Pleads Not Guilty to Killing Victoria Carmen White

Prosecutors allege that Alrashim Chambers shot White to death in Maplewood on September 12, 2010.

A Newark man pleaded not guilty in the September 2010 shooting death of a Maplewood woman today in Superior Court in Newark.

Alrashim Chambers, 24, is accused of in her cousin's apartment at Jacoby Street and Boyden Avenue on September 12, 2010. He was and was arraigned today on murder, weapons offenses and bias intimidation in connection with the murder. The bias charge stems from the Essex County Prosecutor Office's contention that Chambers shot White after learning that she was a post-operative transgender female.

White and her cousin had met Chambers and Marquise Foster at a club in Irvington earlier in the evening. White, who attended Columbia High School as James White, had undergone sex reassignment surgery several years ago and was working as a model in New York. Her death spurred an outpouring of grief from family, and .
