Maplewood Pols React to Christie Win

In this overwhelmingly Democratic town that supported Jon Corzine big time, how to cope with a Chris Christie win?

Update: This article has been updated to include Vice Mayor Kathy Leventhal's comments along with those of Mayor Vic De Luca, Deputy Mayor Fred Profeta and Committeeman Jerry Ryan.

Jon Corzine and Maplewood have had a pretty tight relationship through the course of Corzine's term as governor. After all, the Town has an overwhelming Democrat voter registration majority; 83% of Maplewood voters chose Barack Obama as president last fall; and all five members of the Township Committee are Democrats (and have been since 1993).

The Maplewood/Corzine love affair was evident in the fact that Corzine visited the Town twice within eight days as he campaigned this fall. Corzine's daughter Jen also once ran the Pen and Jen tea bar in the Maplewood train station.

Christopher Christie did not visit Maplewood during his campaign.

In this hotly contested gubernatorial race, Maplewood went for Jon Corzine in a big way, giving him a 5,497 to 1,565 edge over his challenger—and now governor-elect—Christopher Christie.

How will Maplewood cope now that Christie has won?

Maplewood Mayor Vic De Luca was quick and gracious in his comments: "Although Maplewood gave Governor Corzine a huge plurality, over 4,000 votes, all of us are wishing the best for our new governor, Chris Christie. His success will hopefully benefit our residents, especially if he can fix the broken tax system in the state. We will work with the new administration to make sure Maplewood's interest are not ignored.

"On the other hand, his positions on social issues like marriage equality and choice are problematic. We must continue to push for a progressive agenda.

"We also want to thank Governor Corzine for being a good friend to Maplewood."

De Luca said he e-mailed the comments as he was watching Christie's acceptance speech on television.

Jerry Ryan, who was just elected to a three-year term on the Maplewood Township Committee, also reacted to Christie's election: "I'm disappointed that Governor Corzine lost. I hope that we can work with Governor Christie to benefit everyone in Maplewood. I, too, am disappointed in Mr. Christie's position on the issues that I think are important to folks in Maplewood. I hope that when our new Governor gets a chance to see what's really important to us here, that he'll be able to find a way to work for the benefit of everyone."

Deputy Mayor Fred Profeta had these comments to offer:

"Govenor Corzine's defeat, while not totally unexpected, is disappointing. He has a fondness for Maplewood, visited us often, and supported our initiatives. I am one who agreed with his policies, while not always agreeing with his political tactics. But politics is cyclical, and much of the mood on this election day had to do with the economy. That mood will change."

Finally, these comments from newly re-elected Maplewood Township Committeewoman and Vice Mayor Kathy Leventhal: "Governor Corzine's priorities matched with my goals for government.  Unfortunately, he served during this extraordinarily difficult economic time. Hopefully, Governor-elect Christie can affect New Jersey's tax structure.  We'll be working with Christie to make that difference for Maplewood."

There has been no response yet from Maplewood Republican leadership.
