Maplewood Proclaims Autism Awareness Month, Library Centennial

It was a night of proclamations at the Maplewood Township Committee meeting Tuesday, with the township declaring Autism Awareness Month, the 100th Anniversary of the Maplewood Memorial Library, Arbor Day 2013 and ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously).

Jonah Zimiles, owner of Words Bookstore, and his son Daniel, as well as students from the Garden Academy were on hand as committeewoman India Larrier read the proclamation declaring April Autism Awareness Month.

"We don't take this proclamation for granted, we are very appreciative," said Zimiles, who noted that the township cares for people of all races, genders, religions as well as those with physical and mental challenges. "This is not your typical community."

After committeeman Marlon K. Brownlee read a proclamation commemorating the staff of the Maplewood Memorial Library and noting its centennial, director Sarah Lester said the library would not only be celebrating its past this year but also its present and future. Committeeman Jerry Ryan read a proclamation declaring April 26 Arbor Day in the township of Maplewood.

Finally, Deputy Mayor Kathleen Leventhal issued a proclamation announcing the township will partner with the South Orange - Maplewood School District on the Project ACES program, which encourages children to exercise. In conjunction with the Maplewood Loves Wellness initiative, on May 1 at 2 p.m. school students and township employees will exercise, walk, jog, bike, dance, or do aerobics for 15 minutes.

Director of Physical Education Judy LoBianco received the proclamation on behalf of the district, calling it "the most amazing thing ever" to have a township that supports children's health and well-being.
