Maplewood's Green Team in Action

Maplewood's Green Team downtown spreading the word about reducing, reusing and recycling.

Headed by Deputy Mayor Fred Profeta, Jr., Maplewood's Green Team was downtown today spreading the word—and the word is "green."

Profeta, Dave Gilbert and other volunteers were in front of the Maplewood Village U.S. Post Office on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., encouraging residents to take the Green Challenge, to volunteer, to buy t-shirts and water bottles, and to think green. The Challenge lists 12 items one can check off to be more "green"—from reducing driving to recycling and getting a household energy audit (see attached). Profeta reported at the last Township Committee meeting that more than 100 Maplewood residents had signed the challenge at Maplewoodstock during the weekend of July 10 and 11.

"My 4 R's are reduce, reuse, recycle and rethink," said Gilbert.

Maplewood has been recognized by Sustainable Jersey for its leadership in all things green, most notably for having the first Public LEED certified building in the state—the new police station and municipal court building on Springfield Avenue.
