Maplewood/South Orange Wildlife Portfolio
Last December, we published photos of a red-tail hawk at Bowdoin and Harvard. Today we add pictures by Joy Yagid from the South Orange duck pond and Barry Kaufman's photos of a turkey gone wild.
Lions and tigers and bears—not quite. But we do have local documentation of hawks, herons and turkeys.
This past week, Joy Yagid saw a rare visitor to the South Orange duck pond—a blue heron—and quickly snapped some photos. Earlier this month (note the snow still on the ground), Barry Kaufman spotted a turkey roaming in Maplecrest Park and across from the Hilton Branch of the Maplewood Library. Add those to Stephen Power and Alison Grant's photos of a hawk feasting on squirrel on Bowdoin Street in late December and we have ourselves a wildlife gallery going.
Patch is looking to add some non-avian animals to the menagerie. Let us know if you capture any images of raccoons, possums, deer, rabbits or coyotes. We're thinking any appearances by bears would show up on the police scanner.

Nina, your cats seem to be attracting a lot of wildlife! I'm thinking the bunny and the turkey are not so bright.

Mary -- Or maybe they're very bright and understood the screen door between them and the cats was latched!

Uh oh, they're evolving! Our days of world dominance could be numbered.
