Marylawn of the Oranges Academy to Close in June
The class of 2013 will be the last to graduate from the South Orange school
School officials today confirmed that Marylawn will close its doors in June.
Students at Marylawn Academy of the Oranges learned recently via a parent meeting last week and information circulated in school today. A student petition to keep the school open is here.
Donna Sartor, spokeswoman for the school and convent, confirmed that is Marylawn's last school year. Facebook and Twitter are full of student and alumnae posts about the closing. The Marylawn Facebook page has a number of comments urging fellow alumnae to help "save the school." Twitter posts read, "Marylawn is really closing this year," and "I'm actually sad about Marylawn closing simply cause I wasn't expecting it so soon." The Marylawn website shows that a scheduled Oct. 13 Open House for prospective students was cancelled.
The school has been trying to sell or demolish the Montrose mansion adjacent to the school on the large property.The house was once owned by the Graves family. The school and home are now owned by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, headquartered in Convent Station.
Marylawn launched a middle school in the fall of 2010. When it was founded in 1935, the school educated boys and girls in the lower grades and girls only for the high school years. It is now a girls' school.

thats so sadd that it been open for so long and it has to close down

Maybe if they would have allocated the money properly it wouldn't be closing. My daughter attended Freshman to Junior. I wouldn't subject her to another year, and she didn't mind at all. Sad. I was a good school the first year and half. Then the principle changed.

As parents of a Marylawn alum, we were very fortunate to have this Academy. From the moment we went to the open house we fell in love with Marylawn. This Academy, along with its great academic qualities, teaches strength, leadership and sisterhood among young women which also molds and inspire young women to strive for higher achievement which leads them to some of the most prestigious universities of higher education which my husband and myself find so wonderful - we need more schools like Marylawn - we do and always will be grateful to Marylawn -- keep MARYLAWN opened!
