Township Committee Focuses on Old Police Station

Proposals for the Dunnell Road site will be publicly considered by the Township Committee

The Township Committee holds a special session Monday to consider options for the old police station. The meeting will be in the Main Hall of the Township Municipal building at approximately 8 p.m., following a closed session meeting, and is open to the public.

The building was designated a "property in need of rehabilitation" following a study commissioned by the town earlier this year. Five bidders have expressed interest in the space. The YMCA wanted to use the structure for a full-service gym. Another company wanted to make the property a for-profit gym. In addition, there were two housing proposals, one for market-rate apartments and another for discounted artist housing.

A final, later, proposal suggested that the existing structure could be used as a surgical/medical facility or torn down and rebuilt as a mixed-use project for a medical facility and housing. Either option, the developers say, would employ sustainable building practices and design.

The economic development committee met with each of the developers. The artist housing, for-profit gym and YMCA proposals have been rejected. Township officials said both required too great a contribution from the town.

“We are more comfortable with the concept of high-end rental units and the mixed-use medical building,” Maplewood Mayor Vic De Luca said at a Township Committee meeting earlier this month.
