Patch's Week in Review

A look back at this week's top stories.

On Monday, we had a barrage of stories about fundraisers and benefits. We ran a gallery of photos our photographer Nilsa De La Cruz took at a Morrow Memorial Methodist Church fundraising dinner. Brooke Lefferts reported on the Community Quiz Bowl held to raise money for SOMEF. And South Orange Patch Editor Cotton Delo wrote about the "Celebrity Readings" event at SOPAC, which raised money for the Adult School. Cotton Delo also filed a story about out-of-work residents networking at the Maplewood library.

Delo also kicked off Tuesday with a report from the Board of School Estimate's vote on the schools budget. We discussed how several thefts were reported in the Township. Marcia Worth gave a play-by-play of the Celebrity Readings event. We spoke with Maplewood Mayor Vic De Luca about his vote on the school budget.

On Wednesday, sports writer Todd Cohen looked forward at Columbia High School's coming season. Also, we featured more pictures of cute kids.

On Thursday, we ran a profile of CHS Fencing star Brian Kaneshige. And, that night at midnight, food columnist Ben Salmon's contest came to a dramatic conclusion. Regular Patch contributor Judie Hurtado wrote about the Saturday morning Zumbathon event at Columbia High School raising money for the school's Midnight Madness event. Also, Maplewood police assured us that crime in the township, when viewed over a 15-year period, was steadily decreasing.

Cotton Delo's report on the county's plans for reforestation of South Mountain Reservation kicked off our Friday. Ben Salmon's account of learning to make pizza like the pros followed. We ran an update on how the grants to retain three Maplewood police officers were going. We noted that the police reported a high school-age youth was robbed by two other teens in Maplewood. And Danielle Elliot reported on the surfeit of comic book talent in South Orange and Maplewood.
