Police Charge Irvington Man, Newark Youth With Burglary and More
The late night incident is oddly complicated.
Usually when I’m writing these crime items, I use the first sentence or two to sum up the police report. An incident from this week defies such easy categorization. It has too many intriguing elements, including theft from a motor vehicle, a bicycle chase, a hiding spot, marijuana and more.
According to Maplewood police, shortly before 4 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8, police responded to a report of a car getting burglarized near Boyden Avenue. When they arrived, two suspects fled from the scene on bicycles. One of them, a juvenile from Newark, was apprehended. Another, 18-year-old Irvington resident Rashon Spruill, was found hiding under a deck on 44th St.
Police say a search of the suspects revealed some stolen items, plus four bags of marijuana and a folding knife. Spruill was charged with burglary, possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and possession of burglary tools. Juvenile charges against the 16-year-old include burglary and possession of a controlled substance.
