Record Number Runs Maplewood's July 4th 5K

Karl O'Reilly won the race in 16:13. Cathy O'Brien was the top female finisher at 20:05.

The Third Annual Maplewood 5K elicited more than 300 registrants—it's highest number of participants yet, according to volunteers.

Under bright skies, the race was well-attended as temperatures had not yet reached the 90s and the humidity was low.

Still, top finisher Karl O'Reilly of Ireland by way of Whippany said he ran faster last year when it was cooler. His first-place time this year was 16:13. Last year, he finished in 16:10. His personal best 5K time is 15:37. Cathy O'Brien of Denville was the top female finisher at 20:05. For complete results, visit CompuScore.

Cross-country coach Miriam Jackson was very happy with the turnout. She thanked the crowd for supporting Columbia High's Cross Country Team—the organizers and beneficiaries of the race. "With this money, we pay for cross country camps, buy sneakers and uniforms," said Jackson.

Top three finisher medals were awarded in every category except one: top stroller pusher. Patch is awarding that honor to Joe Geoghan of Maplewood, who pushed not one, but two kids totaling about 90 lbs. through the 3.1-mile course.

A shout-out to Liz and Marion (no last names were given) too—they finished dead last. "We decided to walk," said Liz.
