Time's a-wasting, runners of Maplewood and South Orange!

The Maplewood Lions will be hosting the 11th annual Maplewood in Motion 5K and Kids' Fun Run this coming Sunday, October 16. (How did that sneak up on us?) The time to register is now. Here's how:

Register on line:

https://secure.marathonguide.com/register/maplewoodinmotion

The Maplewood in Motion 5K will start at 9 a.m. The 3.1-mile course takes runners through several Maplewood neighborhoods, finishing in the center of town, adjacent to Ricalton Square. Find the map here.

The Kids Fun Run starts at 10 a.m. and gives kids the opportunity to take part in an event that might otherwise have been just for adults. The Fun Run starts and finishes in the center of town, adjacent to Ricalton Square.

The kids are walked out on Maplewood Avenue toward South Orange, to various starting points based on age/ablity (at the discretion of parents) — from 100 yards to a quarter of a mile. The smallest kids will start first and run toward town, finishing in front of Valley National Bank. Once they finish, the next group out will run, and so on, finishing with the biggest kids. Participants will receive medals.

The goals of the Maplewood in Motion 5K are to promote fitness and fun in our community and raise funds that will be used to support community organizations. In the past, the Lions have raised money through the run to buy life-saving thermo-imaging equipment for the Maplewood Fire Department. The club has also used Maplewood in Motion funds to support Seton Hall University's Division of Volunteer Efforts (DOVE), the Jersey Animal Coalition, and the South Orange Maplewood Education Foundation. Previous beneficiaries have included YouthNet, Ever Upward, the Columbia High School Alumni Association (CHSAA) Field Renovation Project's campaign for Underhill, the ARC of Essex's three Maplewood-based programs including Avenues for Seniors, After-School Recreation Program and Maplewood Community Resource Program; Children Together Foster Care Shelter, Maplewood Volunteer First Aid Squad, The Maplewood 9/11 Fund, Michelle (Shelley) Traina Riecke Teaching Fellowship, South Orange/Maplewood Mentor Program (SOMMP) and the establishment of a Maplewood Recreation Department Scholarship.

The Maplewood Lions are pleased to announce the two beneficiaries for the funds raised this year: the Durand-Hedden House & Garden Association and the Maplewood Middle School YouthNet After School Cross Country.

All runners are strongly encouraged to pick up their packets (shirt, number, etc.) on Saturday, October 15, the day before the race between 9 a.m. and noon at the Civic House in Memorial Park on Dunnell Road. (See the location on the map here.)
