High school Saturday activities canceled — except for basketball game.

Updated 7:00 p.m.: The National Weather Service has changed Essex County's forecast to a winter weather advisory.

Forecasters are predicting the first significant snowstorm of the new year.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch for Essex County today that will remain in effect through Saturday afternoon.

Already, the South Orange-Maplewood School District has canceled all Saturday activities at the high school — except for the basketball game.

Forecasters say there's a 100 percent chance of snow tonight (Friday) and we could see one to three inches by morning. Most of the snow is expected to fall after midnight.

There's an 80 percent chance of snow Saturday, mostly falling before 1 p.m., with two to four inches possible.

Temperature lows are predicted in the low-to-mid 20s tonight.
