SO/Maplewood Students to Lose Day of Spring Break

The numerous snow days are now eating into vacation time. Besides the school closure, here's a running list of cancellations and delays for Friday, February 26. Oh, and Crane's Deli is open.

Superintendent of schools Brian Osborne has confirmed that students in the South Orange Maplewood School District will be losing a day of spring break vacation in April in order to make up for days lost to cancellation due to snow.

Previously, district schools were scheduled to be closed from Good Friday, April 2, through Friday, April 9, 2010, with school resuming on Monday April 12. However, students and teachers will now need to report to school on Friday, April 9.

Osborne pointed out the use of vacation days to make up snow days is defined in the 2009/2010 school calendar listed on the district website. The language is reprinted here: "Should the District use more than the two allotted emergency closing days, the first Make up Day will be Friday, April 9, 2010, working backwards to Monday, April 5, 2010 as needed; or at the end of the school year if emergency closings occur after April 9, 2010."

The Township of Maplewood and the County of Essex declared snow emergencies in order to clear parked cars from County roads for plowing. Cars parked on those roads are subject to towing and ticketing. The Township cancelled jitney service for today.

Remarkably, as of 8 a.m., the FAA reported that Newark Liberty International Airport was experiencing gate delays of 15 minutes or less, though they suggested checking with carriers about individual flights.
