By 10 p.m. tonight just a few souls were left in Memorial Park quietly dismantling tables, folding up the stage into a trailer, kicking around some beach balls, swinging light sticks and doing a post-festival debriefing.
For those gathered for conversation, the verdict was in: Maplewoodstock again was a phenomenal success—in the very least as an event that brings the community together and celebrates the unique factors that make Maplewood, well, Maplewood.
Over the two days, neighbors met, chatted and broke bread. Local businesses spread and sold their wares. Local charities raised money and awareness. Teenagers in purple shirts—volunteers from the HK Community Fund—circulated throughout the event over the two days, helping vendors, musicians and visitors alike.
Children played in the dry grass while their parents enjoyed top-notch local and national acts. As Audrey Rowe of the Community Coalition on Race watched Maya Azucena perform, she marveled about Azucena's combination of beauty, talent and showmanship: "She is the complete package." About the event itself, Rowe stated, "This is wonderful!"
