The Weekender: It's Another 'Big' Event Weekend

Plenty of events around the towns this weekend.

Lots to do around Maplewood, Millburn and South Orange this weekend!

First, it's your last chance to catch Columbia High School's production of Big the Musical. Also, A.R. Gurney's Indian Blood is in its last weekend at The Burgdorff Center for Performing Arts.

Health nuts will be romping in holistic heaven at the much anticipated—at least among the yoga set—3rd Annual Mindful Living Health & Holistic Healing Fair at the Woman's Club of Maplewood this Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

At SOPAC this weekend, the Afiara String Quarter, composed of four graduate students from the Julliard School—Yuri Cho and Valerie Li on violin, David Samuel on viola, and Adrian Fung on cello, will perform on Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15 for the general public, $12 for seniors, and $10 for SOPAC members. Tickets can be bought here.

The Education Foundation of Millburn-Short Hills will hold its annual fundraiser at the Maplewood Country Club on Friday at 7-11 p.m. Millburn Schools Rock will feature entertainment by a Bruce Springsteen tribute band, the B Street Band. In addition, there will be food, auctions, raffles, and other prizes. All proceeds will be put towards upgrading classroom technology, which all Millburn schools will benefit from. Admission is $75 per person and more information can be found here.

The 1978 Arts Center in Maplewood will host a night with Carmen Amaya, a Spanish flamenco dancer, who will speak about her past in Franco's Spain and how she views dance on Friday. The night will feature a discussion, videos and, of course, dancing demos. For the entry fee of $5, light tapas (snacks) will be served.

For those looking to catch a film, the New Jersey Jewish Film Festival enters its third week. This weekend, films include "Seven Minutes in Heaven," on Saturday at 9 p.m. and "William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe" on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both films will play  at the Leon and Toby Cooperman JCC in West Orange. Tickets are $10 for the general public and $9 for students and seniors.

The Metropolitain Orchestra of New Jersey will present its annual winter concert, Mozart and More, at the Community Congregational Church in Short Hills on Sunday. Michael Stratechuck of Maplewood will be conducting the program which will include Bach's Double Violin Concencerto in D Minor, Bizet's Carmen Suite #1, and Mozart's Magic Flute Overture and Symphony 40. The concert is free. For concert information visit here or call (973)379-6431.

On a more serious note, Mark Braverman, author of Fatal Embrace. Christians, Jews and the Search for Peace in the Holy Land, will be the guest preacher this Sunday at 10 a.m. at Wyoming Presbyterian Church, 432 Wyoming Avenue, Millburn. Descended from Palestinian Jews, Braverman has a unique perspective on the struggles in the Middle East and, since 2006, has devoted himself full-time to the Israel/Palestine conflict.

For the kids, Stories in Motion in Maplewood will be hosting a dance party this Saturday night at 6:30-8:30. The event will include pizza, dancing, dessert and more. The cost of admission is $20 and is for children in Pre-K through fifth grade. More information can be found here.

Emma Stein is a senior at Newark Academy.

I'm not sure who "John Patrick" is, but The Strollers' show "Indian Blood" was written by A.R. Gurney and directed by Bob Coe.
