PSE&G Releases Latest Power Restoration Plan

Shows power in Maplewood being slowly restored over the rest of the week. Another "disappointment" says Mayor DeLuca.

Update, 11/6, 11 a.m.: PSE&G just released an updated power restoration plan. It shows that roughly 45% of Maplewood -- or 4,294 customers -- remains without power. The new plan estimates that approximately 1,000 customers will be restored each day on Tuesdsay, Wednesday and Thursday. The rest will be restored by Saturday; 51 customers will remain without power after that date, according to the plan. (It is attached to this article as a PDF).

PSE&G also has tweeted to some Maplewood customers that one issue with restoration is that some downed wires are located in backyards that are tricky to get to, and some of those are transmission lines that feed electricity to other residences and streets.

Clinton, Maplewood Middle School and Tuscan Schools are still without power. Jefferson School is now open.

Also on the horizon, the National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for the tri-state area. The forecasts predicts a Nor'easter to hit the state Wednesday into Thursday.

Update, 11/6, 9:12 a.m.: PSE&G announced it is issuing a revised workplan shortly. As soon as it is available, Patch will report on it here, as well as on our Facebook page and on Twitter. The company said this morning it had restored an additional 30,000 customers statewide overnight; it is unclear how many of those were in Maplewood.

According to Mayor DeLuca in an update on Maplewood Online Monday night:

Lights have come back on at the senior citizen building on Irvington Ave. They also were restored in the Village and on some of the streets west of the Village. Lights back on Brookwood, Meadowbrook, parts of Elmwood and Parker and Woodside. I do not think PSEG reached their 2,000 goal for today. Just another disappointment from our utility company.

I pitched Maplewood's story to the Star Ledger and spoke to Governor/Senator Codey. I plan on continuing to pressure PSEG until power is restored. Their plan released this morning talks of another 1,000 customers being restored on Tuesday.

As of the beginning of the day, the initial 9,100 outages have been reduced by 3,400 to 5,700. Hundreds more were put on today and more tomorrow.

Don't get sidetracked by the responses from PSEG customer service. They know of every service outage. The Township has a map of all trees that were knocked down. That is how public works, police and fire personel make post storm plans. We have given this information to PSEG dispatchers and our county office of emergency management.

We are still talking about some assistance with NYC commuters. Hopefully we will have an idea tomorrow.

The shelter tonight has been moved to the Burgdorf Center on Durand Road. This was because of election day.

You will be able to vote tomorrow at your normal polling place. 6am until 8pm. Voting at Clinton will be in the trailers in the rear.

If you are emailing me using the Township email, that has not worked since Tuesday, October 30th.

There is still no power at Tuscan, Clinton & MMS. We are working to get these sites back up along with Winchester Gardens.

Update, 11/5, 5 p.m.

In a phone interview with Patch, Assemblyman John McKeon said that while PSE&G's latest statistics show that 95% of customers statewide will be restored by Tuesday, "all percentages are meaningless if you are the 5% still without power." McKeon said that according to PSE&G, "their crews are everywhere" but they have not been more specific about restoration times for Maplewood and South Orange.

"We are going to continue to press them and be a squeaky wheel," said McKeon. He said that later, after every customer had been restored to power, he would ask PSE&G to explain why the restoration efforts had taken so long.

Meanwhile, Maplewood Village lost power at around 2 p.m. on Monday, just before Maplewood's Halloween Parade. "We have been told it is temporary, as they are working to repair power lines," said Mayor Vic DeLuca.

Work crews from as far away as Florida and Texas have been seen throughout town.

Update, 11/4, 9:30 a.m.

PSE&G has released its latest work plan, which can be seen here. The revised plan is now a six-day plan, which estimates that of the 5,442 Maplewood customers (or roughly 57%) still without power:

  • 2,140 will be restored by end of day Monday, 11/5
  • 1,070 by Tuesday
  • 1,070 by Wednesday
  • 407 by Thursday
  • 265 by Friday
  • 172 by Saturday

That will leave 318 customers still not restored by Saturday.

Update, 11/4, 10:45 p.m.

This afternoon, after PSE&G revised its original estimates of power restoration to the township, Mayor DeLuca urged residents to personally email Ralph LaRossa, PSE&G's president, at Ralph.LaRossa@pseg.com.

Here is the email DeLuca sent to LaRossa:

Dear Mr. LaRossa, PSEG has mislead the people of Maplewood with the estimated time of restoration. We were initally told Sunday would be the day of restoration and now we are being told the restoration will be over the next two days and that is not even 100% restoration. The new schedule is not acceptable. Restore our power according to the orginal schedule.

A revised workplan released by PSE&G early Sunday morning reported the following:

  • 2,186 customers expected to be restored by end of day Sunday, 11/4
  • 1,092 customers expected to be restored by end of day Monday, 11/5
  • 1,092 customers expected to be restored by end of day Tuesday, 11/6

Out of a total of 9,496 customers in Maplewood, 5,682 (or nearly 60%) remain without power. If the restoration plan is accurate, there will still be 1,412 customers without power on Wednesday.

PSE&G continues to give Friday, Nov. 9 as the LATEST date by which ALL customers will be restored.

A copy of the workplan is attached to this article as a PDF. It can also be accessed here.

There have been reports of power trickling back to certain streets and areas, including Springfield Avenue, Burnett Avenue, the area near DeHart Park, Jacoby Street (including Seth Boyden School), Irvington Avenue and the Hillcrest Area

In its most recent press release, as of 11 a.m. Sunday morning, PSE&G wrote:

At the request of the Governor, we have provided details on our work plan for the next three days.  It is available on our website (www.pseg.com/workplan). The number of customers expected to be restored is an estimate based on work currently assigned and will change based on emergent conditions and the need to reprioritize work. An updated plan will be posted late this afternoon.

Very hard working PSEG crew spent approx 2.5 hrs yesterday afternoon at Prospect & Harvard, replacing transformers, repairing main lines and reconnecting homes that had been severed. Residents were left thinking power would return last night and as of now it has not. Many left off generators to avoid problems if it returned overnight. Hard working guys, yes, but still starting Day 7 with no power: Not acceptable.

Ran into a single pseg guy yesterday afternoon, who said they have not yet even been diverting crews to the township, which explains wht we've seen no trucks. The worksheet is clearly just a pr effort to please the governor.

Wrote this to the CEO:

Our community has the highest proportion of outages of nearly any township on the worksheet you have provided, but there has been almost no progress. Although we have no substation problems, we see no evidence of crews working in the area, with transformers and power poles still lying in the street. We understand you have had a lot to do, but do not understand why restoration deadlines are being repeatedly missed, and why we do not even see crews arriving. What is happening here?

Pseg just posted it's new revised revised restoral schedule on its site. They've pushed all the same numbers they had up yesterday out a day (ie, no restorals in last 24 hours) and have extended out the schedule for restorals to six days -- so some are looking at post 11/11.

Norfolk Ave off Parker and surrounding area totally dark. I wrote to the CEO as well. This is ridiculous. Everytime we lose power after a storm, PSE&G's excuse is always due to flooding at their facilities. Can someone explain to me why they can't make their facilities flood-proof? What is so difficult about this? We go to the moon and we can't flood-proof a vital electrical facility? If they were, the crews could have gone right to work in the towns. Instead, we have to wait for substations and other facilities to be pumped, repaired and brought back on line.

Also, the fact that gas stations don't have power to pump the gas that they have in their tanks should be a crime. I heard that in places along the gulf like Florida it is mandatory. This is unacceptable. Mayor Deluca should be buying or renting generators and placing them temporarily at our gas stations.

Hi, I have sent the following message to Sen. Codey, Assemblywoman Jasey and Assemblyman McKeon:

"I want to add my voice to what I’m guessing are many that you are hearing to express grave concern that PSE&G’s power restoration plan for my community of Maplewood, NJ appears to be a moving target that is making insufficient progress toward restoring service in our community. The timetable has been changed—and substantially extended—three times in as many days and without any explanation by PSE&G for the further delays. And while a very energetic crew spent nearly 3 hours working at our intersection (Prospect and Harvard Streets, near the Tuscan School) yesterday afternoon, and left neighbors with the impression that power would be returning last night, we again spent the evening in the dark.

To the extent that your office and others can intervene with PSE&G to demand that they provide a more stable, definitive timetable and accelerate progress, it would be much appreciated.

Best regards and best wishes to you,"

the crews are hardworking and lovely but the company is a disgrace. It was in the 40s in my house yesterday and the temp is only dropping. Cust Srvc reps have been rude and dismissive. Not one person had come to assess our street (Oakview) until we tracked down a guy on a neighboring street who came by after he was done there. Seeing loads of Entergy and FPL trucks in town now, but if this truly takes another 4-5 days, they better offer some compensation of some sort!

BTW - interesting note from Mr. Stocker above regarding the news that they hadn't even started diverting crews this way (per the crew person he chatted with). I did email the CEO, but have a feeling that much like my calls and tweets - it will go unanswered.

fyi - just spoke to another lovely PSEG guy on Oakview who was guarding the downed wire/pole (took them six days to do so!) who didn't have any information but essentially INDICATED that from what he can tell (where workers are - what he's seeing on our street etc.) the power on Oakview won't be going up anytime soon. At least not in the next couple of days. He also said that they're decreasing the workers hours. Which - I get they've been working insane days, but with it going below freezing and over half of their customers in town STILL w/o power... how is that ethical?

BTW - do any local or county officials read these comments?

Does PSEG have a grudge against the Maplewood resident? It seems that way because look what's happening. Maplewood is dead last in tackling the electricity issue while all other counties are cozy and warm in their house. I wished PSEG management would not just understand what the residence without power are going through but to join the additional no power days and frustrations. I think I hear PSEG members are "aahhhiing" with great comfort because THEIR power is back on!!!! Oh how I wish we could shut off the PSEG members power line for 7 plus days!!

This is outrageous. PSE&G claims they have crews everywhere but in the past 7 days I have seen ONE JCP&L truck and ONE truck from Mississippi. That's it.

Additionally frustrating is the fact that the crew from Mississippi have nothing to do. They said they are looking for stuff to repair, but have to wait for PSE&G. In our specific case, they need to wait to replace a felled pole because PSE&G hasn't turned off the power to that pole.

For the past week, I have been in support of their efforts, making it clear that I do not know the scope of the work they are dealing with. Now, as we approach the 7 day anniversary of the loss of power, I wonder how long I would keep MY job if I ran the company so poorly.

I'm so scared. I have an elderly grandmother living with me and she can't travel long distances because of her recent surgery. My mother, father and I all work, but I had to force myself to stay home and sacrifice my two jobs and time away from school so that I can be around to take care of her. If she had electricity, she would have heat, the means to call for help and be comfortable. It really hurts me when I can visibly see her breath with my flashlight because its dropping in to the 30s at night and not be able to do anything about it with such limited resources. I sleep next to her to keep her warm, but aside from that there isn't much I can do except pray and call the phone numbers given to me by my neighbors to check unreliable timetables. I love her so much. I hope PSEG sees this comment somehow and see how much we really need the power to come back.

I would appreciate any updated information about Winchester Gardens Wednesday morning. Thanks again.

there was reportedly an article on either 1010 or 880 indicating that some NJ town, Maplewood included, are particularly "challenged" with their power restoration because of the location of the power poles. Now I'm not clear on this, and perhaps someone can elucidate farther or confirm, but sounds sort of fishy?

New work plan from PSE&G just released. Looks like they missed Maplewood's target improvement by about 1,000 homes yesterday...

Scott K: I think some more trickled in overnight, but that sounds more or less correct. At end of day Sunday they were at ~5,400 out and now we're at 4,300.

My family and neighbors just lost power this morning on Prospect Street near the SO border, after having been on throughout the storm. A friend of mine on the South Orange/Maplewood border lost power yesterday, still not back on. I hope this is temporary but really??

If this is the new plan so be it. Carolyn, is it at all possible to find out which neighborhoods will be last? Then, at least, forewarned is forearmed. We could plan accordingly.

Elaine, I will ask Mayor DeLuca if he knows the answer to that, when I see him in about an hour.

Carolyn Maynard-Parisi - any idea for Boyd and Elberta Road? Kinda worried about water line pipes in the house. If no power this week at all and temperature falling could the pipes burst? Should I shut off the mail water line to prevent this?

Governor Christie should never have said to get all power restored NLT Nov 9. Why? PSEG are using this to spread their work out until the 9th. Wished the Governor had said Nov 2nd not 9th.
