War of the Lawn Signs

Beyond the lawn signs, get to know the Board of Education candidates at two upcoming debates.

The election for three seats on the South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education is just one week away and related lawn signs are proliferating.

In an informal survey this morning that ranged from Ridgewood Terrace to Maplecrest Park in Maplewood, this Patch editor counted more than two dozen BOE candidate signs.

If you haven't had time to focus on this election to select three of the people who will administer almost 60% of the money collected from your local tax bill annually, then you can read up on each candidate here on Patch: Incumbents Lynne Crawford and Beth Daugherty are vying with challengers David Giles and Wendy Sachs for three available seats.

You can also read our report on the first debate sponsored by the Hilton Neighborhood Association. Or you can attend the League of Women Voter-sponsored debate tonight at 7 p.m. at Jefferson School. Patch will be reporting on this debate and filming it for future airing on SOMAtv. Another debate takes place tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Marshall School and is sponsored by the Community Coalition on Race. The conversation at this debate will center on the achievement gap and leveling.

Wendy Sachs tells us she has 40-plus signs up throughout Maplewood and South Orange as of April 13!

As more than one political wag has said: Lawn signs don't vote :-)

So, Mr. Ryan, did you not do lawn signs for your election?

Nope. Last time I did lawn signs was in the primary in 2003.
