Woman Arrested in Soup Incident at Quick Chek

The following arrest information was supplied by the Maplewood Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Maplewood Police have arrested an Irvington woman who allegedly threw hot soup at a manager and then drove her car at the manager in the parking lot in September.

Kathy Melvin, 43, was arrested on a warrant and charged with one count of robbery from the incident that occurred just before midnight on Sept. 13 at the Quick Chek at 1545 Springfield Ave.

The store manager reported to police that she confronted the woman in the store when she suspected her of trying to leave without paying for a cup of soup.  According to the manager, the woman threw the cup of hot soup at the manager when she was approached and asked to pay. The woman then ran out of the store. The manager followed the woman in the parking lot in front of the store where the woman entered a silver Infinity and, according to the manager, purposefully drove at the store manager who was standing on the sidewalk.
