Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno Visit to Barnegat Light's Viking Village Focuses on Supporting Jersey Shore Area Economies by Purchasing Jersey Seafood

Emphasizing the contributions of New Jersey's seafood industry to advance the state and local economies, Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno visited Barnegat Light's Viking Village, a commercial seafood production company. Today's visit marks the Lt. Governor's fifth stop on her month long tour of agribusinesses across New Jersey, with a spotlight on the importance of New Jersey caught and processed seafood to the state and local economies. In addition to providing a market for local fisherman by buying their freshly caught seafood, Viking Village also purchases goods and services with a local focus, sustaining jobs for people within the Jersey Shore region.

The economic impact of Viking Village - and  New Jersey's seafood industry overall - extends far beyond the docks, making sales of Jersey Seafood vital to jobs and a variety of economic opportunities along the Jersey Shore and across the state. Viking contracts with a New Jersey cardboard box manufacturer to store and ship processed seafood. To transport the packed boxes of seafood to its customers, Viking contracts with a New Jersey freight trucking company.

"Fresh and delicious seafood is a popular staple of New Jersey's agriculture industry and is critical to both the state and local economies along the Jersey Shore," said Lt. Governor Guadagno. "New Jersey fisherman, seafood processors, truckers, restaurants and supermarkets all rely on a thriving New Jersey seafood industry for their livelihood. The Christie Administration is committed to continue making New Jersey a business-friendly environment to help companies like Viking Village succeed and expand in the state."

The family-owned Viking Village was founded in the 1920s and has a rich heritage within Barnegat Light.  Able to accommodate up to 45 commercial fishing boats, Viking Village processes about 6 million pounds of seafood a year, which is sold to stores and restaurants in New Jersey and throughout the country.  Seafood processed at Viking Village includes sea scallops, bluefish, golden tilefish, croaker, swordfish, tuna and monkfish. The company uses a variety of fishing techniques to limit their impact on the sea life environment while still producing millions of seafood annually. Viking Village also works closely with the National Marine Fisheries Service who plays a major role in management.

"Coastal development began as small fishing communities throughout New Jersey's coastline. Through conservation and responsible fishing practices, we have every interest in protecting the healthful resource and the very valuable contribution economically to New Jersey," said Viking Village general manager Ernie Panacek. "Commercial fishing parallels New Jersey's very valuable agricultural industry, providing food essentially for the world populations. Fishermen are farmers too."

In 2010, New Jersey fishermen reeled in 162 million pounds of seafood, valued at $178 million and helped generate a billion dollars of economic activity. The industry generates thousands of jobs, including 2,500 commercial fisherman, 1,500 of which are employed by 109 seafood processors and dealers.

The Jersey Seafood logo identifies local seafood and helps assure quality and is modeled after the state's successful Jersey Fresh branding program for produce. Upon being licensed, aquatic farmers, commercial seafood harvesters and packer/processors of New Jersey seafood commodities may market their products using the Jersey Seafood logo. Every year, seafood chefs from across the state compete at the Jersey Seafood Challenge, which takes place at the Governor's residence, Drumthwacket. The winning chef has been sent to compete against chefs from across the nation at the Great American Seafood Cook-off every year since 2008. In 2009, Peter Fischbach, head of dining service at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, placed second in the national competition, while Scott Anderson of elements restaurant in Princeton placed third last year.

New Jersey produces more than 100 kinds of fruits and vegetables and ranks among the nation's largest producers of blueberries, cranberries, peaches, tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, snap beans, spinach, and squash.  The state's 10,300 farms generated sales of about $1.1 billion in 2011.  This includes nursery and greenhouse plants, sod, fruits and vegetables, field crops, equine, poultry and eggs, and dairy.

Led by Lt. Governor Guadagno, the New Jersey Partnership for Action (PFA) supports the vital role business plays in advancing the state's economy and creating jobs.  The PFA is a three-pronged public-private approach to economic development and the starting point for all initiatives, policies, and efforts to grow New Jersey's economy and create quality, sustainable jobs in our communities.  The three elements of the PFA include the Business Action Center, reporting directly to the Lt. Governor and providing the business community with a single point of contact, applying a proactive, customer-service approach to businesses' interactions with State government; the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, serving as the state's "bank for business"; and Choose New Jersey, an independently funded and operated 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation created to encourage and nurture economic growth throughout New Jersey.

Businesses considering a move or in need of assistance are encouraged to call New Jersey's Business Action Center at (866) 534-7789 or visit the State's Business Portal at www.newjerseybusiness.gov.

Corzine WAS a waste of tax dollars. Nothing positive came out of his administration. He tried to sell of the Turnpike to foreign banks, tried to build the $1Billion tunnel to nowhere, and did nothing to reign in costly government.

In case it somehow escaped your razor-sharp notice, the lottery is a special tax on the stupid. Throw in the poor for good measure and you have a very successful revenue stream and a sure-fire way to sell hope that will never be realized. But a decent distraction from getting ahead the old fashioned way...hard work.
Given the tone of your comments, Nucky, I wouldn't expect you to understand the rationale behind the get-rich schemes of the lottery. It's along the lines of, "Give them more circuses."

Crafty....Surely Bush was not the best president in my lifetime. Can we agree, however, that he is NO LONGER our president? When does Obama develop a record during his presidency on which he can be judged? This election has zero to do with Bush and everything to do with the choices made by our current president over the past 4 years. Obama himself stated that his presidency should not exceed one term if he cannot improve the economy. Let's hold him to his word. Not only did he not improve the economy, he worsened it on every objective level. Judge the man on HIS decisions, HIS solutions and HIS prospects for improving our nation's economy & international standing. Much to President Obama's chagrin, he does now have a record, which he owns. Do not apologize for the man or excuse his ineptitude. HOLD HIM ACCOUNTABLE for his policies and the state of our nation. I can assure you that you likely will not be giving Romney a pass in 4 years if our country tanks to the same degree it has during Obama's presidency. At least be consistent (across party lines) with your expectations.

Odumbo's press literary agent claimed he was born in Kenya on all of the publicity material they ran! According to a promotional booklet produced by the agency, Acton & Dystel, to showcase its roster of writers, Obama was "born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii." (http://www.wnd.com/2012/05/shocker-obama-was-still-kenyan-born-in-2003/)

I've done a lot of marketing and PR in my day -- and trust me, there is no way in world ANY AUTHOR would let such a slip-up go by. Biographical information is ALWAYS cleared with the author and/or the author's attorney.

John, while it is true that this promotional booklet did say that Obama was "born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii," you should probably do a little more research. If you look on Breitbart News, the site which originally posted about the discrepancy in the promotional booklet (http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2012/05/17/The-Vetting-Barack-Obama-Literary-Agent-1991-Born-in-Kenya-Raised-Indonesia-Hawaii), you can see that they have included a note from Senior Management:
"Andrew Breitbart was never a "Birther," and Breitbart News is a site that has never advocated the narrative of "Birtherism." In fact, Andrew believed, as we do, that President Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 4, 1961."

Furthermore, the editor of that part of the promotional booklet has issued an apology (which you can read here: http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/OTUS/born-kenya-obamas-literary-agent-misidentified-birthplace-1991/story?id=16372566) which states:
"There was never any information given to us by Obama in any of his correspondence or other communications suggesting in any way that he was born in Kenya and not Hawaii. I hope you can communicate to your readers that this was a simple mistake and nothing more."

And lastly, a New York Times article, published a year before this promotional booklet, identifies Obama's birthplace as Hawaii. You can see that article here: http://www.nytimes.com/1990/02/06/us/first-black-elected-to-head-harvard-s-law-review.html

And this gentleman is a classic example of why debating politics amongst two people will never get you anywhere, but make two adults look like children. both parties get further entrenched in there ideas, thus making any true headway simply impossible. neither democrats nor republicans have all the answers. the answer is the american people. We used to be a hard working proud people who never looked down on other nations and knew the meaning of true hard work. We actually made things in this country, we were a proud people but we never beat our chests or hung our technological accomplishments over other nations. the fact of the matter is, your generation has dug this once great nation into a gargantuan hole. The only way we are going to fix it is to cut all the ridiculous spending ACROSS THE BOARD, get off our asses, and get to work. we are behind in every category except defense spending where we outspend 25 of the top 26 countries combined. Who says the base is unmotivated? You? Keep dreaming.

Yes, the national debt has increased. So you think contracting GDP is a way out of a recession? What business school did you attend?

4.5 million jobs over the past 26 months. What was GWB's job record in his final 26 months? Yes, I would STFU if I were you on that one!

The federal government doesn't "put" anyone on welfare. Last I heard these programs were run by the states. Why aren't the governors held accountable? Maybe if they weren't so quick to cut public sector jobs.... Oh that's right, the majority of governors are Republicans!

What do Abbott districts have to do with national politics?

Republicans have been predicting the death of Medicare and Social Security since the programs were started. They pit youth against Seniors and whites against blacks and citizens against the undocumented. We had reasonable social policy from FDR until Reagan and he changed the tenor of politics. He opened his Campaign in Philidelpha, Miss. where three Civil Rights workers bodies were found and blasted a mythical Detroit Welfare queen and that was no accident. Our politics have gotten worse with an 8 year respite when Clinton was in Office. Clinton was attacked for his personal behavior not his Patriotism or where he was born. Republicans have become the party of hate even driving out moderate principled people so we are left with the worst of the worst who can't win on the issues but they can on lies and venom. People like you for example.

Dan, there is a reason I do what you do and you sell used cars. Continue to believe the double counted savings touted by Obama if you wish. I for one will believe the professional actuarials who completely disagree with you hand have resoundingly debunked that particular myth you are peddling. You can't use the so called Medicare savings to help pay for ObamaCare and to shore up Medicare's finances. You can use those savings for one thing or the other but not both! Obama uses it for both, he double counts the money.

So no Dan, he has done nothing to extend the life of Medicare. The man already spends that money elsewhere.

Social Security is in excellent shape, it's not in crisis and has not contributed one penny to the deficit. It has $2.7 TRILLION in assets which earn interest, when you count in the interest then SS is still taking in more than it gives out. The trust fund will be used up in 2033 (IF nothing is done) but SS can still pay 75% of benefits which would still be better than what the GOP is offering. Just raise the SS wage tax cap and problem solved. The SS wage tax cap is currently capped at $110,100. Only the first $110,100 of income is subject to the SS tax. So the rest of Bill Gates's income, after the $110,100, isn't subject to the SS wage tax. For over 70 years, SS has not missed a payment through wars, recessions, stock market crashes and the constant BS garbage coming from the GOP that SS is a Ponzi scheme and the trust fund is fake. Are your senior relatives getting fake checks from SS?

The 1 tax return Mitt condescended to release shows he outsourced millions to Cayman Islands and Swiss bank accounts, just like he (Bain) outsourced thousands of US jobs. This is a poor reflection on his Americanism.

Who knows what other evil lurks in the other 11 years of tax returns he refuses to release? Was he audited and fined for hiding any money over the years? What does he have to hide? This is a poor reflection on his character. Most Americans are now suspicious of Mitt and he's losing support.
