Two of the most common questions I get are, "Should I eat before I workout?" and "What should I eat before I workout?"
The answer to the first question is YES. Your body is like an engine, it cannot work without fuel ... Here are my top choices to answer the second question.
1. Bananas—They are loaded with digestible carbs and packed with potassium, which aids in muscle function. This is great to combine with a Greek yogurt 30 to 40 minutes before your workout and you're ready to rock! Your body will need the carbs and protein, trust me...
2. Oats—The fiber rich food will gradually release carbs (energy) into your bloodstream. Oats are also rich in Vitamin B which helps convert carbs into energy.
3. Wholegrain bread—Great source of carbs. Top it off with some honey or jam and add a couple of hard-boiled eggs for protein and you have a power-packed snack that's ready to fuel your workout.
4. Fruit smoothie—Loaded with carbs and full of high quality protein. Better yet they are easy to consume and are rapidly digested. Try to mix it with a low-fat yogurt, 1/2 cup fruit and some crushed ice.
If you're going to stay away from this list, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.
Stay away from fatty foods before working out. Fat leaves the stomach very slowly, which will leave you feeling sluggish and could lead to muscle cramps. Carbs are good but you should not get them from candy, sugar drinks, or any other raw sugar food ... this will most likely lead to a crash mid-workout.
Also, Do not overeat before a workout. These are all snacks not meals. Overeating can lead to indigestion, cramps, fatigue, etc., etc.
