Ready, Set, Quack! There's Still Time to Get Your Ducks in a Row

The 14th Annual Rubber Duck Race is fast approaching, and you can get in on the action.

One of the highlights of the local social calendar, the South Orange & Maplewood Kiwanis 14th Annual Rubber Duck Race will be held on Memorial Day in Maplewood's Memorial Park. The action-packed event immediately follows the parade and the ceremony at Maplewood Town Hall. It will be an afternoon of fun and camaraderie, as hundreds of people line the river cheering on their ducks toward victory. There are six heats in which 600 rubber duck racers will "compete."  In each, the first 12 ducks to float across the finish line win prizes (each duck has a number written on it in indelible marker). Participants can sponsor rubber ducks for a donation of $5 each at Maplewood Stationers in the days leading up to the race, as well as at the starting …

VIDEO: For the Love of Butter

Ever wondered the secret to Able Baker's deliciousness? Hint: it's all about love and butter.

A video featuring local spot The Able Baker was a finalist in a national video contest featuring local businesses that make an impact in their communities. Maplewood filmmaker Catherine Stratton, who made the piece, is a big fan of the bakery. "When I heard about the contest, Able Baker immediately came to mind," said Stratton. She approached owner Julie Pauly, who was very enthusiastic about the idea.  The contest, called 'This is Retail,' was sponsored by the National Retail Federation, the world's largest retail trade association. Stratton specializes in making films that tell short stories designed to engage an audience right away, which is critical in short form films. Her goal was to tell The Able Baker's story in a way that brought …

Maplewood Deli & Grille and Crane's Are Readers' Picks

It was a close race, with two local faves coming out on top

Maplewood has enough top-notch delis to satisfy most tastes, from classic to gourmet. Two that are located in the Village -- Maplewood Deli & Grille and Crane's at Highland Place -- are clear standouts, according to our poll. One voter wrote, "Maplewood Deli and Grille Rocks. Great place. Great food. Super owner."  Maplewood Deli & Grille goes the classic route, with superb Sloppy Joes and the irresistible Maplewood Cheesesteak. Crane's, owned by Steve and Janet Crane, inspires devotion for spins on traditional fare, like the BLT with Roasted Tomatoes and Herb Mayo on grilled rye, and the Fresh Mozzerella and Basil with Sundried Tomato Pesto on a Ciabatta Roll. If you haven't already, make sure to check out both of our local favorites and …

How Is Your Graduate Planning on Paying for College?

A NYT special report examined the implications of a generation ‘hobbled’ by soaring college costs.

When the Class of 2012 graduates from Columbia High School next month, the vast majority will pursue college degrees. Most will take out loans to cover the costs. But a New York Times special report last weekend cautioned that student debt is a rapidly growing problem with no end in sight. “We just finished reviewing applications this week and were all commenting on the remarkable amount of loans taken by the students,” said Joan Lee, a member of the Columba High School Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to Columbia High School seniors and graduates. “You wonder how they will ever dig out from under,” she said. How did we get to this trillion-dollar point? Andrew W. Lehren, a South Orange resident and New York Times …

Wine and Art Meet at Above

Hank Zona's wine selections are being served at Above

Hank Zona stands at the intersection of art and wine. A recent show at Maplewood's GAS Gallery and Studio showcases artwork inspired by and related to the culture and love of wine. Works include art created for wine labels and art containing wine themes. Next the art show moves to Westfield's Cool Vines, and the wine selections travel to Above Restaurant and Bar. Lyman Dally, Kevin Lynn, Andre Mack and Tara O’Leary were part of a discussion panel, says Zona. "It was a blast," he says, noting that drinking good wine not only leads to art, but can be art itself. Zona discusses this further in a recent edition of The Grapes Unwrapped. Taking the experience even further, Zona approached Above Restaurant and Bar to talk art and wine. He …

NJ Spotlight Map: How Does Essex Stack Up With Recycling?

Data shows Essex County staying even with recycling, while many counties are recycling less waste than in mid-1990s.

Residents in Essex County are doing a pretty good job recycling their waste. In a county where 1.57 million tons of waste was generated, 61.6 percent was recycled, according to NJ Spotlight's latest interactive map. Overall, New Jerseyans are recycling less of their waste than they did in the mid-1990s, data from the state Department of Environmental Protection show. At the peak, residents across the state were recycling 61 percent of what they discarded in 1996 and 1997. That number dropped to 57 percent statewide in 2009. Prior to the enactment of the state’s mandatory recycling law a quarter of a century ago, 10 percent or less of waste was recycled. The law initially set a goal of recycling 25 percent of the municipal solid waste …
