Some local events for St. Patrick's Day.
Ah, St. Patrick's Day, a brief respite in Lent to slake one's thirst and dance a reel. And Maplewood is as anxious to belly up to the bar and wear the green as any other town. As you might imagine, St. Paddy's Central in Maplewood will be St. James's Gate Publick House on Maplewood Avenue. The gates at The Gate open at 8 a.m. for Irish breakfast—a menu including corned beef and cabbage, shepherd's pie and and fish and chips that runs straight through the day until closing time at 2 a.m. Bagpipers will be on hand throughout the day at The Gate. Yes, even at 8 a.m. And if early morning bagpipe music is your thing, you can best the Gate by 10 minutes and catch the bagpiper over at Clinton School. Every year, a bagpiper leads the children …

Fifty-five children signed up for an afternoon of arts and crafts at the Dunnell Road Rec Center, sponsored by DreamWorks and the Maplewood Theater.
Through the driving wind and rain, they came. And they came in droves. Parents and children who were already feeling cabin fever by 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 13, braved the weather to enjoy a promotional event for the DreamWorks film "How to Train Your Dragon," opening at the Maplewood Theater on March 26 (and, yes, nationwide). Susan Rinaldi of the Maplewood Theater was on hand to distribute fruit snacks, coloring books and movie posters to the children. Tuscan parent Mary Meddahi was organizing the event and even added her own craft to the festivities—a fire-breathing dragon fashioned with a toilet paper roll and streamers. It certainly seemed that all 55 children who registered did show up, as the windows quickly fogged in the crowded …

She's locally famous for her morning glory muffins, but Christine Muccigrosso—formerly of Cafe Meow—wants to clean your closet.
Christine Muccigrosso wants to get into your drawers. And your closets, your basement, garage, attic, file cabinets—you name it. Always an organizational junkie, Muccigrosso has turned her penchant for cleaning, filing, coding and purging into a new business—The Clutter Clinic. For a fee, Muccigrosso will come to your home—or office—and help you clean out the clutter that has overwhelmed you. You need to book a minimum of two hours but a normal Clutter Clinic visit lasts more like four to five hours. The Clutter Clinic serves Essex, Morris and Union counties. What's the most major issue? "People have too much stuff," said Muccigrosso. "They don't throw things out and they buy too much—there's a huge shopping addiction in this country." …

Bill and Candace McClure will take the Maplewood institution to 378 Millburn Avenue—the site of Millburn Feed.
Maplewood Pet Shop, which has operated on Maplewood Avenue in Maplewood Village since 1946, will close its doors by April 1 and move to Millburn. Bill McClure has been the owner and operator of Maplewood Pet Shop since 1972. He was born and raised in Maplewood and still lives in the house he grew up in, along with his wife and business partner Candace. But McClure has found business to be a bit cramped at his Maplewood Avenue location. With just 1,300 sf of space and no storage areas, there's no room to expand. When McClure heard that his colleagues (the Boile family) at Millburn Feed were retiring, he was interested in taking on their space at 378 Millburn Avenue, across the street from Town Hall. Millburn Feed has more than double the …

The fortunes of Springfield Avenue remain mixed as Round Table closes. Now if that sushi restaurant could just hurry up and open. . . .
Fans of Springfield Avenue and of Round Table—a business that provides tutoring and enrichment programs for kids—are suffering a blow. Round Table will be holding a closing sale this Saturday as it prepares to close the doors of its Springfield Avenue location, at least temporarily. Round Table will continue to run after-school programs, camps and classes—just not at 1923 Springfield Avenue. Visit their Web site for updates on times, classes and locations. The news of the location closing comes as Springfield Avenue juggles good news and bad news alike with The Beaded Path moving to South Orange Village in March while a new sushi place plans to open across the street and Walgreen's moves forward with site preparation near the municipal …
Eat yourself out of the late winter blues with a smorgasbord of dining options, March 1-7.
With all the restaurants taking root in Maplewood Village, it may feel like every week is restaurant week, but, in actuality, Maplewood Village Restaurant Week will start Monday, March 1, and run through Sunday, March 7. "Maplewood Village has become a restaurant destination, a mecca with all the positive reviews the restaurants have been getting," said Julie Doran, manager of the Maplewood Village Alliance. Doran noted positive reviews of Indigo Kitchen & Bar in the Star-Ledger, Arturo's Osteria & Pizzeria in The New York Times and Restaurant Lorena's selection as one of Zagat's top 25 New Jersey restaurants in 2008 and NJ Monthly's top 25 in 2009. "We have some longstanding favorites and diverse cuisine—Indian, Japanese, Chinese, …

This year's Chamber of Commerce business card exchange at The Burgdorff drew an eclectic group of realtors, bakers, movers and shakers.
Realtors, publishers, health care providers, insurance agents, bankers, an able baker and one recovering couch potato met up Wednesday night at the Annual Business Card Exchange jointly hosted by the Maplewood Chamber of Commerce and the South Orange Chamber of Commerce. Recovering couch potato? That would be Mike Schatzki, MPA, CSP, of The Recovering Couch Potato. Mike works as a motivational speaker for companies large and small to spread the word that even moderate exercise (such as walking) can improve health and lower workers' and businesses' health care costs. [Of course, Toby Feller and Karen Robson were on hand to let everyone know that the South Mountain YMCA will ensure that today's youth never become couch potatoes in the first …

Merchants give the event a big chocolate kiss—as they hand out treats to plenty of shoppers.
It was late in the event, but No.165 was so busy one could hardly belly up to the chocolate fondue pot. The table at the center of this eclectic apparel and home furnishings shop was attracting attention from children and adults alike with its marshmallows, strawberries, jelly beans and custom-made cookies from The Able Baker. But the better news was that the check-out counter was equally as busy as shoppers scooped up clever and inexpensive last-minute Valentine's Day gifts such as Girlfriend and Boyfriend chocolates, boxes of pecan chocolate bark, chocolate-covered pretzels and "I LOVE U"-shaped chocolates. Down at Maplewood Pet Store business was also brisk despite the lack of lovebirds for sale. Still, all the adorable bunnies, …

There must be a lot of love in this Town with Valentine events taking place in Maplewood Village and on Springfield Avenue.
Last year, Maplewood Village made Valentine's Day in Maplewood a little more special with its first Valentine's Day Chocolate Walk. The Walk is coming back again this year on Saturday, February 13, and the town is getting yet another Valentine's event with the newly minted Springfield Avenue Valentine's Celebration. While the Maplewood Village Chocolate Walk is a one-day event that takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at various businesses in Maplewood Village on Saturday, the Springfield Avenue Valentine's Celebration takes place over a week and features both events and discounts at 40 Springfield Avenue businesses. [Maplewood Village businesses are also offering a number of specials on the actual Valentine's Day, Sunday, February 14. Skip…
