The spirit of Fannie Lou Hamer

Mzuri Moyo will perform her one-woman show about the life and spirit of 60s civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer. Ms. Moyo has traveled the country with her signature performance in this one-woman musical play.

A native of Paterson, Mzuri Moyo has been enthusiastically received on cabaret and concert stages internationally, including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Mzuri recently sang in Paraguay with Opera for Peace. Mzuri's film credits include the poignant portrayal of Lucy in Haile Gerima's highly acclaimed independent film production "Sankofa". Her portrayal of Fannie Lou Hamer received the 2002 AUDELCO Award for Best Solo Performance.

Fannie Lou Hamer was one of the most talked-about activists of the golden age of civil rights and was the Mississippi freedom fighter of the 1960s. Hamer was born in 1917, the granddaughter of slaves and the youngest of 19 brothers and sisters. In 1962, when Hamer was 44 years old, Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) volunteers came to town and held a voter registration. She was surprised to learn that African-Americans actually had a constitutional right to vote! When the SNCC members asked for volunteers to go to the courthouse to register to vote, Hamer was the first to raise her hand, which was a dangerous decision.

The performance will be part of the 10:30 a.m. worship service at St. Andrew and Holy Communion Church.

Sayreville, New Jersey March 2010 -- Catch a Rising Star @ Primetime Comedy Club and Theater is proud to announce its Benefit Fundraiser for the New Jersey 9/11 Memorial Foundation to help build the "Empty Sky" Memorial in Liberty State Park, New Jersey on Saturday, April 10, 2010, doors open at 5:30pm, Buffet Dinner at 6:00pm, Show at 8:00pm.

Join Mike Marino – New Jersey's Bad Boy of Comedy - and Marco Assante for this very special night of Comedy and fundraising. Tickets include a buffet, 45.00 for regular seats and 55.00 for box seats. There will be a silent auction with expected prizes ranging from a Bon Jovi tickets to Golf foursomes and more!

This will be the NJ 9/11 Memorial Foundation's first fundraising event for the Empty Sky Memorial that is under construction at Liberty State Park, Jersey City to honor the 745 fallen New Jersey residents who lost their precious lives on Sept. 11, 2001. "Empty Sky" remembers those lost while powerfully connects New Jersey to Ground Zero. The Foundation needs to raise additional funds and will be having a series of different fundraising events throughout New Jersey, as we would like to have it completed for the 10 year anniversary, September 11, 2011. Mike Marino – affectionately known to thousands of his fans as New Jersey's Bad Boy – is one of the most unique comics of our time. Mike has a tongue like a razor and a heart of gold. He has performed in every major comedy club from New York to Los Angeles including: The MGM Grand, Catch a Rising Star, The Comic Strip, Stand Up NY, The Improv, Rascals and The Icehouse. Mike, who has worked with some of the biggest names in the business, can be seen nightly as a top headliner at both the world famous Laugh Factory. He was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. He entered the world of theatre at an early age, and is a graduate of the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Mike has appeared in over 200 national television commercials, and has received a Best Actor Clio Award Nomination. He has acted in many Prime Time soaps and television shows including: As the World Turns, One Life to Live, Becker, Nikki, Frasier and Party of Five.
