Gallery 1978 will exhibit 10 violins designed by New Jersey artists as part of the NJ Symphony Art Strings project. Maplewood artist, Mikel Frank, is one of the commissioned artists selected for this honor. Art Strings is a collection of 10 individual works of art created with violins as their canvas, with inspiration drawn from the musical program or work the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra (NJSO) is presenting in its 2009-10 season.
These 10 violins will be displayed at NJSO concerts and selected art galleries throughout New Jersey during the Orchestra's 2009–10 season. A reception and concert will be held to celebrate the event. Raffle tickets will be sold for a chance to win one of these violins. The draw will be held on June 1.

1978 Maplewood Arts Center is proud to exhibit the art of Helen Evans Ramsaran for its’ annual Black History Month celebration. Her sculptures are abstract bronze works that have been inspired by prehistoric and ancient cultures and by the architectural elements in traditional African architecture that merge with natural forms.
The exhibit runs until March 7. 1978 is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 2 to 5 PM.
Helen Evans Ramsaran is a sculptor who has been awarded many grants and exhibited in many one-woman shows and group shows, throughout the United States and around the world. Her travels in West Africa, her work with the highly acclaimed stone carvers of Zimbabwe and the grants from the Research Foundation of the City University of New York have all been instrumental in establishing the focus of her abstract sculpture.
In Ms. Ramsaran’s own words after working one year with the highly acclaimed stone carvers of Zimbabwe, “My first real encounter with prehistoric Africa was an experience that formed a new link for me in my own neglected history. Finding this link was very significant.”
A Significant Find is a fitting title for her current exhibit. It showcases her inspiring sculptures and is an excellent tribute for the Gallery 1978 Black History Month celebration of the achievements of African American artists.
