John Robinson has no hands. His arms stop at his elbows. His legs stop before his knees. He is 3'9'' tall. Born a congenital amputee, his parents wondered if he would ever be able to hold a pencil, let alone go to school or land a job.

In his new book, "Get Off Your Knees,"  Robinson discusses the many physical and emotional obstacles he has overcome to live the kind of normal life most people take for granted. Whether he had to figure out how to dress himself or deal with his family's struggle to accept his condition, Robinson never gave up.

His story is pure inspiration. On Sunday, January 24th at 2pm  he'll visit WORDS Bookstore in Maplewood to speak about his determination, his book, and his quest to redefine life as a "disabled" person.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: John Robinson is the Director of Corporate Support for WMHT in Albany, NY. He has been married for over fifteen years and has three children. In 2001, he was selected to carry the Olympic torch as it passed through Albany on its way to Salt Lake City for the 2002 games. This is his first book.

Words appeared on Maplewood Ave. in Jan., 2009, shortly after the close of Goldfinch books around the corner on Baker. Though Words has over twice the selection and size of Goldfinch, this is not a case of a new business behemoth crushing a beloved little Mom and Pop business.

The stores share common DNA; shortly before it closed, Goldfinch was purchased by Maplewood resident Jonah Zimiles, the owner of Words. The new store has the same ambiance, focus and employees as Goldfinch. But with more room to play with, it has expanded its selection and hours of operation.

Noteworthy offerings at the store include a robust special needs section and a children’s seating area with table, chairs, rug and bean bag chairs as well as two other seating areas.
