Maplewood's MayFest 2010 – Bigger & Better than Ever
New Gift Certificate Drawings Will Highlight Community Event Featuring Live Music, Rides, Activities, Great Food, More than
75 Vendors & Artist Displays
Maplewood's Springfield Avenue Partnership (SAP) will host the 9th annual MayFest, an "Old Time Street Fair" on Sunday, May 16, 2010 on Springfield Avenue between Indiana and Princeton. The Avenue will be closed to traffic throughout the event, which will be held from 11 AM till 5 PM. The fair will include more than 75 local vendors, artists, crafters and civic associations, in addition to live music and demonstrations, rides and activities for the kids, plus great food representing the diverse community that lives, works, shops and dines along Maplewood's Springfield Avenue. Rain date is Sunday, May 23rd.
A new feature of the event will be drawings for gift certificates donated by businesses and restaurants in the Springfield Avenue District. Winners will be announced throughout the fair. Visit participating businesses on the Avenue to enter; look for the MayFest poster in store and restaurant windows. A complete list of participating businesses will be posted on the SAP web site, www.springfieldavenue.com.
Harold Bobrow, an SAP board member who owns commercial property in the Springfield Avenue District, is a local resident and former business owner who has spent many years in the community. He believes MayFest is important because it gives Springfield Avenue an identity, and reminds people of the area's history as a shopping and dining destination.
"Anything we can do to bring people here is a positive step," said Bobrow. "From residents to shoppers from throughout Maplewood to the business owners and workers, MayFest really brings all of Maplewood together on Springfield Avenue as one community."
Last year's MayFest took the event, which started back in the 1990s as the Maplewood Festival at Maplecrest Park, to a new level with more activities and more participants than ever before. Maplewood Mayor Vic De Luca noted that there's new energy, enthusiasm and growth on Springfield Avenue even during difficult economic times, and credited programs like MayFest and the SAP's successful 2009 HarvestFest and HarvestWalk for Breast Cancer Awareness on Halloween for contributing to the excitement. "Maplewood is a close-knit community, with residents supporting local businesses, many locally and family owned, making Springfield Avenue a vibrant and inviting place to be," added Mayor De Luca.
The Springfield Avenue Partnership (SAP) will add to the good times at Maplewood's MayFest 2010 by sponsoring the first annual Classic Car Show as part of the celebration on Sunday, May 16th from 11:00 AM till 5:00 PM. The cars will be displayed on Springfield Avenue between Indiana and Princeton Streets. Car show participants are asked to set up by 10:00 AM and enter the designated area at Princeton Street. Rain date is Sunday, May 23, 2010.
The Partnership is offering a $10 gas card to each of the first 40 classic car owners who register before April 30, 2010. Classic car owners will compete for a $50 cash prize for the best costumed classic car and owner. Gift certificates will also be awarded to classic cars in the categories "Best Overall," "Most Awesome" and "A Cool Ride." The prizes and gift certificates are being provided through the generosity of the Springfield Avenue Partnership's business and commercial property owners.
"We believe the Classic Car Show will be popular with people of all ages, and will add to a great day filled with delicious food, excellent entertainment, super sales, fine arts and crafts and lots of activities for children and their families," noted Jim Nering, SAP President.
Space is limited, so interested classic car owners are encouraged to contact Diana Vitrano to register by calling 973.763.6011 Ext. 11 or emailing diana@commercialdistricts.com.
