The Community Building Project was an architecture class that was offered to the SOMa district elementary students last autumn.  The response to the class was overwhelming and the results were a huge success!  The students made an incredible effort and produced great work.

Students in grades 3-5 who participated in the after-school enrichment class were introduced to urban planning, scale, and building types.  Each school was given a portion of a map (of Maplewood and South Orange) to develop into their own "town".  Students at each school collaborated to plan zones for their towns.  Then, each student designed and constructed their own building from reused chipboard boxes.  Taught by parent architects and designers, the program was a collaborative effort and was conceived to unify the students within the district's elementary schools.  An exhibit with all five schools' towns will be presented together for one day.

The Community Building Project invites you to join us at the exhibit.  Sunday, February 5th from noon to 4:00 p.m. at the Baird, 5 Mead Street in South Orange.

The Architects and Designers are:
Jung Lee Masters, Clinton
Paul Westhelle, Jefferson
Devyani Guha, Seth Boyden
Maia Gilman, South Mountain
Cami Zelevansky and Monika Parkitna, Tuscan
