Immaculate Conception High School Awards William Popp Distinguished Educator Award

Immaculate Conception High School Awards William Popp Distinguished Educator Award

The Immaculate Conception High School (ICHS) Class of 2014 marked the 85th graduation on Sunday, June 1st, in Immaculate Conception Church attended by family, friends and alumni.

Immaculate Conception High School is a Catholic, co-educational, college preparatory high school located in Montclair.  As part of this celebratory event, ICHS Director of Technology, Mr. William Popp of Maplewood, received Immaculate’s 2014 Distinguished Educator Award.

Sister Maureen Crowley, S.C., M.A., President Emerita and Class of 1956 said in her speech: “Edward Everett Hale said, ‘I am only one, but I am one. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do. This is Bill’s motto as he moves to adapt an old building to new technology on a very limited budget. He educates all of us, not only in the use of technology, but more importantly in forward thinking. He is a true educator because he makes student and teacher alike accept the challenges of the future and prepares us to make a difference. That we can keep up with technology is the achievement of many talented people, but Immaculate owes a great debt to one, in particular, our own Mr. Bill Popp.”

Education is actually a second career for Popp.  He retired as a computer analyst from Bell Labs in Murray Hill in 2002 and felt inspired to get his teaching certification.  Becoming a teacher has been the pinnacle of his career.  He serves as the Director of Technology, as well as technology teacher and mentor at ICHS.  Many of his students, inspired by his teaching, pursue professions in technology.  During their college break, they frequently visit to say thank you for the encouragement to build on the computer knowledge that he shared in the classroom.
