Exploring Cultural Dynamics in a Diverse Community

Join the Schools Committee of the Community Coalition on Race on April 10th for an exciting learning experience. The committee is hosting two cultural competency workshops on Thursday, April 10th at the Columbia High School Library that will be led by professional trainers from the American Conference on Diversity.

The first session (3:30-5:00 pm) is exclusively for teachers.  It will be led by Bari Katz, Director, Youth and Collegiate Services American Conference on Diversity and will include classroom activities and strategies for creating inclusive classrooms and interactive exercises. Educators will be able to: Explore cultural dynamics in the classroom; Enhance student learning by adopting cultural competency principles; Build more inclusive and affirming classrooms; and Strengthen teacher/parent communication.  Teachers will earn 2 professional development hours and be eligible for to win a scholarship to the summer educators’ institute at Fairleigh Dickinson worth 28 ceu hours!

The second session is in the evening from 7:00-9:00 and is open to the whole community. We will have a community conversation exploring cross-cultural communication and how it affects, parents, teachers, and neighbors.  What is cultural competency? How can our community leverage diversity and become more culturally sensitive?  This session will be led by Elizabeth Williams-Riley, President and CEO for the American Conference on Diversity.
