The Columbus Day walk traverses residential and urban areas as well as woodlands, including three reservations along the Lenape Trail. The walk takes an estimated 11 to 13 hours to complete, but participants are welcome to jump in or out at various points.

The trail was established in 1982 by a retired trail coordinator named Al Kent who wanted to connect points of interest and natural resources in Essex County.

Highlights along the trail include:

  • Ferry Street in the Ironbound
  • Penn Station
  • Military Park
  • NJPAC
  • Newark Museum
  • Sydenham House (Newark's oldest house)
  • Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart

Last year, more than 40 walkers took part in the trek, with eight of them completing the entire route.
