Everything you need to know about the winter storm and the extreme cold hitting the area.

Heavy snow, near-blizzard conditions and wind chills below zero are expected to blast the region the next few days.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for all of North Jersey from 6 p.m. Thursday to 1 p.m. Friday.

The NWS predicts 6 to 10 inches in most North Jersey areas and blizzard-like conditions Thursday night into Friday morning with wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour and wind chills as low as 15 degrees below zero.

SOMA Schools Closed Friday

All Schools and offices will be closed for a snow day on Friday, according to the district website.

Snow Removal

Maplewood residents have exactly 24 hours to clean the snow off their sidewalks or they could face fines, according to a Township ordinance. Under the ordinance, it is illegal to “throw, place, plow or deposit any snow or ice into or upon any traveled area of the street or road that has already been plowed.”

There is a $100 fine for the first offense, $200 for the second and up to $500 for the third. Each and every 24 hours in which ice and snow is not removed from sidewalks shall be deemed a separate offense.

Snow Removal Tips from the Public Works Department

In anticipation of the snow storm, please consider the following snow removal tips:

Plan ahead when snow is on the way. Remove all cars from the street. Do not shovel your driveway apron until you are sure the plows are finished plowing the street. Always pile the snow behind the curb. Never throw snow in front of the curb because this only assures that the plow will plow it back in, or create an unsafe road condition.

Depositing snow from the sidewalk or driveway in the road way is illegal. If you see a salt truck or plow truck driving behind you, let them pass you so they can clear the way for you and open the roadways faster.

NJ Transit Cross-Honoring Tickets

NJ Transit is cross-honoring tickets through Friday, according to its website.

Customers can use their ticket or pass on an alternate travel mode — rail, light rail or bus — including private bus carriers.
