Post Office Looks To Springfield Ave. For New Site

Post Office rejects 1505 Springfield Ave. and 220 Rutgers St., seeks 1830 Springfield Ave.

The US Postal Service is considering 1830 Springfield Avenue as a possible property for relocation, the Township of Maplewood announced on its website.

The Post Office has also extended its lease to remain in Maplewood through January 9, said Maplewood Mayor Victor De Luca.

“We have a letter from the Post Office saying they looked at three sites in Maplewood and this is the site they are going to seek to secure a lease to relocate,” said De Luca. “It will be incumbent on the Post Office or owner of the property to go before the Planning Board if there is a site plan that is required.”

The Post Office also looked at 1505 Springfield Ave. and 220 Rutgers St., but both were rejected because of the expense and time it would take to renovate.

By law, no final action to acquire the property can take place for 30 days from Oct. 28.
