South Orange To Lower Valley Street Speed Limit

South Orange Board of Trustees complements a Maplewood ordinance to lower the speed limit of Valley Street from 35 to 25 miles per hour.

The South Orange Board of Trustees unanimously passed a resolution on first reading, Monday, to lower the speed limit of the entire length of Valley Street from 35 to 25 miles per hour.

The ordinance complements a Maplewood ordinance which was passed in October to lower the speed limit of Valley Street from 35 to 25 miles per hour.

“Maplewood had already changed their section of Valley Street and we only had a few blocks of 35 (miles per hour) so naturally it made sense for us to take our speed limit down to 25,” said Trustee and Public Safety liaison Sheena Collum.

The Board of Trustees unanimously passed the resolution on first reading. The resolution will come back before the Board at the following meeting where there will be a public portion for members of the public to provide input before the Trustees vote on the adoption.

The Maplewood Township Committee passed the resolution in a four to one vote to lower the speed limit on Valley street from the South Orange Border to Millburn Ave.

“A portion of the road is already 25 miles per hour during certain hours because of the school zone,” said Maplewood Mayor Victor De Luca. “Lowering the speed for the whole portion of Valley makes sense.”
