The Weekend: Black History, Jazz and a Wine Tasting
Local Entertainments celebrate Black History Month, Positive Parenting, and Big East
The music being performed locally this weekend is good. Really good. Check out The Religion of Bebop: a Tribute to Dizzy Gillespie, or Jackie Jones singing for the Springfield Avenue Partnership. The Black History Month Celebration at the Maplewood Library also features jazz and drumming, along with readings and stories. Other events include a wine tasting at the Paper Mill, a cook-off in Livingston, and a Big East Game when Seton Hall takes on Rutgers at the Prudential Center. Black History Month Celebration
The Maplewood Memorial Library will host a celebration of Black History Month, emceed by Katherine Hillaire. Appropriate for the entire family, the afternoon will include drumming with Cedric Miller, jazz and spoken word with the Dwight West Trio, selected readings for kids by Township Committee members and actress Ami Brabson; the story of Aida with Lori Mirabel; civil rights songs with Pastor Rodwell Thom and more. Winter Wine Tasting Benefit at Paper Mill Playhouse
Fine wines, artisanal cheese and decadent chocolates will lure you to this fundraiser for the Paper Mill Playhouse. Proceeds will benefit the Paper Mill’s artistic, education and outreach programs. The Religion of Bebop: a Tribute to Dizzy Gillespie
South Orange-based bassist, John Lee, along with trumpeter Bruce Harris and guitarist Yotam Silberstein, will play a tribute to Dizzy Gillespie on the Luna Stage. John Lee spent eight years with the Dizzy Gillespie quintet and big band, and helped create the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars. Trumpeter Bruce Harris studied under Gillespie’s protégé, Jon Faddis, at the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College. Guitarist Yotam Silberstein is a current member of the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars. $15; Sunday at 7 p.m.; West Orange
Think your homemade soup or chili is the best? Put your crock pot where your mouth is and enter the Chili/Soup Cook-off at The Presbyterian Church of Livingston. The pot with the most tickets at the end of the night will win a wonderful culinary gift. Cornbread, dessert and beverages will be provided. Proceeds will benefit the church’s youth activities. Jackie Jones is the featured performer at the Springfield Avenue Partnership’s “An Evening of Jazz”. Hosted by Astah's Fine Art Gallery, this free event showcases the vocal talents of Ms. Jones, a graduate of Newark's High School of the Performing Arts and Rutgers - The State University of New Jersey. The Secret of Roan Inish: Classics for Kids at the Millburn Library
The wonderful film series “Classic for Kids” continues at the Millburn Library with “The Secret of Roan Inish”. The PG-rated film tells the story of 10-year-old Fiona who seeks to uncover the mysteries of the legendary Selkies - seals who can turn human – and perhaps find her baby brother, who was washed out to sea as an infant.
