Art Exhibit Takes Visitors 'Out of the Shadows and Into the Box'

Shadow box art is the focus of the 1978 Maplewood Arts Center's latest installation.

If you enjoy shadow boxes, those glass-enclosed frames containing 3D objects, photos and paintings, the 1978 Maplewood Arts Center has an exhibition for you.

The gallery's "Out of the Shadows and Into the Box," an exhibit of shadow box art, opens Sunday and runs through Saturday, Aug. 18. An opening night reception will be held at the gallery Sunday from 3-6 p.m.

The exhibit includes shadow box artists Debbie Bearg, Phyllis Carlin, Toni Davis-Wilson, Donna Drew, Bob Freese, Ginger C. Garrett, Jeanne Greene, Ellen Greenfield, Mel Holston, Julie Levine, Francesca McClain, Beverly McCutcheon, Vanessa Montes, Abeni Mussa, Mansa K. Mussa, Yasmeena Atia Sharif, Onnie Strother, Lisa Suss, Heidi Sussman, Nettie Thomas and Florence Weisz.

The 1978 Maplewood Arts Center offers some offshoot activities that dovetail with the exhibit theme. On Thursday, Aug. 1 from 7-8:30 p.m., artist Ted Largman talks about his work. As part of the event, visitors can build their own shadow boxes.

The gallery also offers a free children's workshop Saturday, Aug. 10 from 1-4 p.m., and an adult workshop on Thursday, Aug. 8 from  6-9 p.m. Pre-registration and a fee of $50 for the adult class and $15 for materials are required.

Admission to "Out of the Shadows and Into the Box" is free. Gallery hours during the exhibition are Saturday and Sunday, 2-5 p.m.
