When was the last time you gave a secret password at the door, ordered a cup of Prohibition Punch, and found yourself in the middle of the hottest, hippest entertainment around?
Studio B, a Maplewood/South Orange arts organization known for showcasing local talent and offering new-and-unusual performance events, is bringing back its enormously popular Speakeasy Series for another turn around the dance floor. This vaudeville-style variety show channels an era when tap, jazz, magic, comedy and film would be wrapped together into one seemless -- and totally entertaining -- evening of performance.
"The Speakeasy gives audiences the opportunity to see so many dynamic, amazing talents in one place," says Marcy Thompson, co-founder of Studio B. "It's the perfect format to spotlight the diversity of artists from our communities."
"And it's a barrel full of fun!" Adds Jenny Turner Hall, Studio B co-founder. "We love doing this show because it literally makes audiences giddy - and us too."
Last year, The Speakeasy played to a standing-room-only audience. It's been brought back to the Maplewood Woman's Club by popular demand.
"We're thrilled to be presenting the Speakeasy at the Maplewood Woman's Club. It lends itself to this era - a sign of times gone by," says Thompson. "And since the future of the Maplewood Woman's Club hangs very much in the balance right now, it's even more poetic. Who knows what will become of it?"
The Speakeasy will feature the smart, swinging lounge tunes of Ethan Lipton and His Orchestra - a regular at Joe’s Pub, Two River Theater Company, and the 92nd Street Y, Tribeca. This act was hailed by the NY Times as one of 2012's "most galvanizing moments" in theater. "... a groovy, soulful, tuneful meditation."
Also on the roster: Asi Wind, world-renowned street magician, named by David Blaine as “the best magician working today”; Gregory Jones' House of Essex, local jazz masters; Jeffrey Foote of the NJ Tap Ensemble; and comic sketches by Robbie Berry and Michael Perilstein. Reservations highly recommended.
