- Memorial Day is fast approaching and so we are thinking of the start of summer and need to cool off from the sun. Outdoor pools locally in NJ open Memorial Day to Labor Day.

I was born in England where most towns have a Leisure Centre, which has a delightful chlorine aroma and is the epicenter of all things aquatic. Here in my local town of Maplewood, NJ, this concept doesn't exist in the same way, but here are some places for swimming lessons etc.

Indoor pools:

The Connection - Summit

JCC Metrowest - West Orange

NYSC - Livingston

Lifetime Fitness - Florham Park (indoor and outdoor)

Brooklake Country Club - Chatham

Seton Hall University - South Orange

Lessons through YMCA, Maplewood, Summit, Montclair

Outdoor pools:

Most local towns have their own Town Pool.

These outdoor pools are generally open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Here is a quick review.

To join a town pool you must be a resident of that town.

Maplewood Town Pool is located on Boyden Avenue.

There is a shallow splash pool with water squirts and fountains for toddlers, a knee-deep pool for little ones and a large lap pool. There are also slides and a diving board/pool. They offer swimming lessons, a swim team and diving lessons. There is a snack bar.

The membership fees for 2014 varies depending on your situation. A family with 3-7 people costs $405.

South Orange Town Pool is located behind South Orange Middle School, accessible by walking paths from Mead Street or South Orange Ave.

There is a toddler area with wading and knee-deep pools, plus the diving well, and a large lap pool. Plenty of grass and picnic tables for hanging out. They offer swimming lessons and a swim team, plus a snack bar.

Membership fees are about $200.

Millburn Town Pool is located in Gero Park on White Oak Ridge Road.

The main pool has a slide and there is also a wading pool for toddlers. There are swimming lessons and a swim team, plus snack bar.
